Christopher Newport Baseball Earns At-Large Berth into NCAA Regionals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- In a selection show released on NCAA.com at Noon on Monday, the Christopher Newport University baseball team learned that it's season would continue on in the NCAA Regional Championships next weekend. The Captains (25-12) earned an at-large berth into the postseason tournament and will face Mount Aloysius (27-13) at Marietta College on Friday, May 20.

The postseason format for Division III Baseball features 16 campus-site regional championships with a Super Regional bid on the line. Sixty teams were announced as participants of the 2022 NCAA Championship with 19 at-large berths selected.

An at-large pick for the fourth time in program history, the nationally-ranked Captains were one of 18 Pool C selections in the 60-team tournament. Playing in a four-team regional, the Captains are scheduled to face the Mounties after capturing the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship for the first time in program history. The neutral site matchup will be played in the second game of the opening round on Friday, May 20. Ticket information, live coverage and more will be announced later this week.

The rest of the regional includes host Marietta College vs. Kalamazoo College. The double-elimination format will then move to the weekend with three games scheduled on Saturday and one, or two if necessary, played on Sunday for a bid to the Super Regional on the line.

This season, the Captains are 25-12 overall and reached the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship Series for the second straight year. Facing a challenging schedule, the Captains were 15-7 in the second-half of the year. The Captains' pitching staff ranks second nationally in K/9 innings with 11.8 per game. CNU also ranks 17th nationally in ERA with a 3.68 mark.

Offensively, Justin Bowers leads the way ranking sixth nationally in slugging percentage with a .873 mark, currently the best in program history. All-time leader in hits Conner Clark is also the Division III leader in stolen bases for his career and will add to his all-time record in games played in a CNU uniform.

Christopher Newport is making the program's tenth NCAA Championship appearance and the third in the last four seasons the tournament has been held (2020 canceled due to COVID). The Captains captured an at-large berth in 2018 and earned the conference's automatic bid in 2019 for the team's last two showings. CNU has reached the NCAA World Series three times with the most recent coming in 2012.

Mount Aloysius is making the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. This season, the Mounties are hitting .315 as a team while being led by rookie Tyler Quade hitting .440 with 90 total bases this season.
