Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Kelsey Winters Posts 200th Career Point, but Christopher Newport Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 2 Salisbury, 21-7

SALISBURY, Md. -- Kelsey Winters posted her 200th career point and headlined a sensational second-quarter surge, but the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team could not overcome its early deficit as the Captains dropped a 21-7 decision to No. 2 Salisbury during the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

Leading the way, Winters posted three points, including a pair of assists. With that performance, she became just the 10th Captain to reach 200 career points. She also became the fastest player to eclipse that milestone after accomplishing the feat in only her 38th career appearance. Previously, Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Ashton Marshall was the quickest to reach that benchmark after joining the exclusive club in her 45th outing.

Overall, Winters now ranks seventh on the school's all-time charts with 202 points.

Along with Winters, Zoe Dyer also added a pair of goals, including an acrobatic tally that capped off a fantastic second quarter in which the visitors outscored the opposition, 5-2. Meanwhile, Emma Jackson came through with a team-high five draw controls, while Kendall Krause had a goal, takeaway, and three ground balls.

With the setback, Christopher Newport enters the postseason with a 9-8 record while securing the league's No. 2 seed. The Captains will open the playoffs on Wednesday at 3 p.m. when the squad hosts Mary Washington in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Semifinals.

On the other side, the victory bumps Salisbury to 14-2 overall and guarantees the Sea Gulls a berth in the league championship game, which they will host next Saturday.

After finding themselves down 10-0 entering the second quarter, the Captains showed incredible resolve while clawing back into the game. Syd Guidi came down with the opening draw of the period before the offense went to work. Looking to strike quickly, Winters pushed up the left side of the crease before coming face-to-face with a pair of defenders. After drawing the attention of a third Sea Gull, the junior All-American flipped a feed inside to Blake Hopkins, who caught and fired for the team's first goal.

Less than two minutes later, the offense came back for more. After registering her 200th career point, Winters went right to work on her next 200. Following a foul on the interior, she secured a free-position attempt and fired a laser from long-range for her first tally of the game.

While the offense began to find its rhythm, the defense was equally effective. On Salisbury's ensuing possession, Jackson continued to switch off while defending three different attackers during a lengthy rally at the top of the zone. Moments later, she also bodied up another Sea Gull who tried to roll underneath before Madi Rozgonyi stuck to a player at the tail end of the shot clock and forced a difficult attempt that helped flip possession.

On the other side of the field, the offense continued its lethal assault. In the 22nd minute, Winters flipped a pass over the crease in the hopes of connecting with a cutter. Although the ball eventually hit the turf, Dyer won a battle with three Sea Gulls to snatch the bouncer before firing on the doorstep to inch back within seven at 10-3.

Just over a minute later, Krause was fouled on a spin move before capitalizing on a free-position attempt to cut the deficit down to six.

With momentum shifting, Salisbury tried to answer, but Christopher Newport's defense continued to excel. Off a pipe-shot, Joely Stevens snatched a tough ground ball and helped jumpstart a clear. Later, after the Sea Gulls returned to the offensive end, Maddie Rusinko showed off her speed while winning a race to the end line before shrugging off a tough hit by an SU attacker to regain control.

Unfortunately, the hosts eventually broke through again. With just over two minutes left in the first half, the Sea Gulls slapped back-to-back goals on the board to gain a 12-4 lead.

Unfazed by the late rally, Krause put an end to Salisbury's final possession of the period after intercepting a flip pass along the arc. With time winding down, Christopher Newport cleared the zone and put together a last-minute offensive stand.

Showing patience with the clock winding down, Winters took control on the left side of the zone before flipping the ball back to Sloane McDonald. Needing to move quickly, the second-year standout laced a feed inside to Dyer, who had a defender draped on her back. Incredibly, the senior came through with an out-stretched snag in traffic to secure the pass before converting along the left pipe for her second tally.

After seeing their 10-goal lead cut to seven entering the second half, the Sea Gulls regrouped after halftime. Similar to the first quarter, Salisbury pieced together a well-rounded showcase in the third stanza while outscoring the Captains, 7-0, to grab a 19-5 advantage entering the final quarter.

Although Salisbury continued its hot streak with the first goal of the fourth period, Christopher Newport fought back on both ends of the field. First, on the defensive side, the Captains put together 90 seconds of tremendous work while forcing a shot-clock violation. Riley Rafterry-Lee was glued to an attacker on the right side of the zone to prevent an early shot before Rusinko forced an off-balance pass, which helped generate the turnover.

Following a quick clear, Alexis Kasuda bolted up the left sideline before cutting inside. Faced with a tough angle along the pipe, the senior capitalized on the smallest sliver of daylight to give Christopher Newport its sixth goal of the game.

Later, on the back end, Hopkins checked a Sea Gull at the top of the zone and dislodged the ball, which Jackson collected. Then, on Salisbury's next trip down the field, Rafterry-Lee and Sophia McCullers double-teamed an attacker along the left pipe to wall off an initial attempt before Izzy Shefrin came through with a pointblank save to quiet a second-chance opportunity.

With time ticking down, the Captains landed one final blow in the last minute of regulation. Capping off her historic appearance, Winters dropped a pinpoint pass to Lindsay Connell. Although the junior had a defender in her face, she switched hands, dipped under the Sea Gull, and slammed on the inside for the game's last goal.

Overall, Salisbury held a 35-16 advantage in shots and a 14-10 edge in ground balls. Along with Krause's three rollers, Stevens added three, while Rusinko chipped in with a pair. Meanwhile, Lizzie Burgoyne came through with three saves, Shefrin had two, and Taylor Schoolar snagged one.
