Live Video  ||  Live Stats

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team will close out the regular season portion of the home schedule on Saturday afternoon, hosting the University of Mary Washington for a pair on Saturday, April 23 starting at Noon. The Captains, ranked No. 28 in the most recent Collegiate Times/ABCA National Rankings, are 22-10 and welcome in the Eagles with a 17-16 overall record.

Prior to the game, head coach John Harvell will recognize the senior class of 2022, featuring seven players appearing in their final home regular season games. Fifth-year senior Conner Clark will be joined by Jonathan Fisher, Eric Lingebach, Michael Martorano, Scott Reid, Kyle Schofield, and Thomas Wells in the celebration of a group that contributed to the team's 2019 conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance and have won 89 games coming into Saturday's action.

For fans unable to attend in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be provided. Voice of the Captains Francis Tommasino is on the call with Josh McMillan on color as the Captains host the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on CNUsports.com/watch. Links to both the video stream and live stats can be found on the CNU baseball schedule online or at the top of this page.

Christopher Newport swept the twin bill in Fredericksburg earlier this Spring as the teams will matchup in Newport News to complete the home-and-home conference series. CNU won game one, 9-2, and ran away with game two, 15-2, back on April 2. CNU has captured 15 of the last 16 in the all-time series to take a 28-10 advantage in the matchup.

On Saturday, the probable starting pitchers for the Captains will be sophomore Jay Cassady and junior Dylan Weber. Cassady ranks fifth in the nation in strikeouts this season and is threatening the top-ten single season marks in program history. Weber also ranks in the top-50 in strikeouts and has contributed to the Captains ranking third nationally in K/9 coming into the weekend's matchup. Weber is 3-3 with a 3.38 ERA while Cassady enters the weekend with a 6-3 mark and a 2.44 ERA.

Offensively, Clark is coming off a record-breaking performance against Washington and Lee, where he set the program all-time hits record with 232 career base hits. He also tied Billy Steel's program record for career games played and will break that mark on Saturday. He is one of six regulars hitting over .300 for the Captains, including leading hitter Justin Bowers with a .379 mark. In addition to leading the squad in average, Bowers also has blasted 13 homers with a team-high 38 RBI and 35 runs scored while walking 25 times this season. He has the highest slugging percentage in program history with a .947 mark and currently stands with the third-highest on-base percentage with a .527 average.

Mary Washington is a young team that features a handful of talented sophomores leading the way in 2022. Playing both ways, Ty Lowe is at the top of that second-year group hitting a team-best .350 with 32 RBI and 23 runs scored. He has also started five games and boasts a 3.64 ERA through his first 29.2 innings pitched. Fellow sophomores Brendan McComber (3-4) and Alex Kobersteen (3-2) have started a combined 17 games with 82 strikeouts between the two. Also out of the sophomore class, Bobby Ayscue and Noah Roots have combined for 32 RBI and 57 runs scored while hitting five home runs out.

Christopher Newport will close the regular season with a road trip to Roanoke College followed by a doubleheader at Salisbury University on May 7.
