Zoe Dyer's Overtime Dagger Carries Christopher Newport Women's Lacrosse Past Mary Washington, 11-10

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Adding the perfect punctuation mark to a sensational Senior Day, Zoe Dyer capped off a marathon battle with an overtime rocket to lift the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team past Mary Washington, 11-10, on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.

Against the Eagles, Dyer registered her seventh hat-trick of the season, including an eight-meter missile in the 62nd minute to close out the festivities. Syd Guidi also added four goals, while Kendall Krause punched in a pair of tallies.

On the defensive side, Lizzie Burgoyne was marvelous between the pipes. The fourth-year standout came through with 10 saves while also forcing a pair of turnovers to earn her third victory of the season. Meanwhile, Emma Jackson also had two takeaways and nine draw controls during a well-rounded performance.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 8-7 on the season, including 1-0 in Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference action. The setback drops Mary Washington to 8-7 overall and 0-2 in league play.

After the Eagles landed the final goal in regulation with less than a minute left to knot the score at 10, the hosts quickly shrugged off the momentary setback during the break. Recharged in the extra session, the Captains put the game away quickly.

On the opening draw, Jackson battled her way through a sea of Eagles before winning the scramble after a Mary Washington foul. On the restart, Guidi bolted her way up the field before the offense took control. Eventually, Dyer earned back-to-back free position attempts, including the final one from the center hash.

With a clean look, she stepped up and whistled a screamer inside the right pipe to polish off the victory.

Overall, Christopher Newport held a 28-24 advantage in shots during the game, while Mary Washington led the way in ground balls, 13-10. Both teams came through with 12 draw controls.

In the early going, the Captains got off to a quick start. Less than three minutes into regulation, Kelsey Winters opened the scoring after burying an eight-meter shot. Holding an early advantage, the defense locked down the high-powered UMW attack.

Leading the way, Burgoyne stoned a low liner off a free-position attempt before snuffing out a high rope just moments later. Maddie Rusinko also found her footing with a great ride at the top of the zone to force a low-percentage shot before winning a race to the sidelines following an errant pass to close out another defensive stand.

Meanwhile, on the offensive end, Guidi polished off the opening period with her first strike to secure a 2-0 lead entering the second quarter.

Although the Eagles opened the new stanza with their first goal of the game, Christopher Newport quickly retaliated. Dyer dipped her right shoulder underneath a defender and scooted around the left pipe before converting on the interior. After Jackson controlled the ensuing draw, Guidi put an Eagle in the spin cycle with a series of cuts before ripping on the run for her second dart.

Once again, Mary Washington answered with another goal before Krause closed out the first half in style. On the offensive end, she landed back-to-back blows. First, after the goalie made an initial save, Krause stuck with the play and knocked the rebound out of the air and into the back of the net. Less than a minute later, she capitalized on a feed from Winters before whipping a blast from close range for a 6-2 lead.

With time ticking down in the first half, the Eagles attempted to mount a response, but Krause was there on the other side as well. She pounced on a pass in the center of the zone before bursting up the field on a successful clear to help close out the second period.

After halftime, the defense continued to clamp down on the UMW attack. Burgoyne came through with two quick saves, including another stop on an eight-meter attempt. Later, Riley Rafterry-Lee broke up a play on the interior, while Joely Stevens blanketed an attacker to help prevent an on-target rip.

Unfortunately, the Eagles continued to poke at the defense. Although Alexis Kasuda converted a free-position attempt in the 40th minute, the visitors chipped away at their deficit. Eventually, Mary Washington strung together a solid stretch and pulled back within one as the third period came to an end.

Entering the final 15 minutes of regulation, Guidi got the Captains off to a solid start in the fourth quarter. The sophomore left a defender in the dust with a hard cut before depositing on the doorstep despite taking a shot to the face, which handed the hosts an 8-6 lead.

Battling back, Mary Washington slapped two straight goals on the board to even the game at eight with less than nine minutes remaining in regulation. After that point, the contest became a seesaw affair with both teams trading punches.

Breaking the deadlock, Jackson intercepted a pass on the defensive end before clearing the zone. Taking advantage on the other side, Guidi jammed home her second straight goal with six minutes left. Later, after an equalizer by the Eagles, Dyer dragged a defender around the left pipe before snapping off a laser to regain a 10-9 edge.

Although Mary Washington eventually struck again to force overtime, Dyer had the final answer in the extra session to lock up the win.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the Captains host Meredith at 5 p.m.
