FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport rookie
Raine Weis secured the most impressive win of her young career with a straight-set victory over regionally-ranked veteran Abby Moghtader, but the No. 25 Captains suffered an 8-1 loss on the road Thursday afternoon. The Captains dropped a Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference matchup at No. 14 Mary Washington and fell to 7-7 overall on the season.
In just her second career match at No. 1 singles, Weis was charged with a tough task in Thursday's conference matchup. This week's C2C Player of the Week carried that momentum into the match as Weis faced Moghtader, the reigning Conference Player of the Year and doubles All-American. Winning in straight sets, the Captains' freshman pulled away for a 6-3, 6-3 victory and improved to 10-4 overall this spring.
It was the first win for a CNU player over Mary Washington on the top line since March 25, 2018 when
Johanna Ranta-aho secured the win over Kait Brogan. Prior to that,
McKinney Harwood secured a thrilling, marathon win over Brogan on April 23, 2016. Those stand as the only three wins at No. 1 against the Eagles since at least 1996.
Weis was ranked No. 10 in the most recent Atlantic South regional rankings while Moghtader was ranked as high as No. 3 in the region.
Unfortunately for the Captains, that was the lone point of the day in the match as Mary Washington swept doubles and earned wins in the remaining five singles matches.
Megan Bauer forced an extra game in the first set at No. 6 before falling to Emily Beckner (7-5, 6-1) and the No. 3 doubles tandem,
Kiersten Chang and
Karina Crivtonencu, secured three game victories before falling in an 8-3 final.
Kendra Womack picked up six games in her setback to Hana Kimmey at No. 5 (6-2, 6-4) and Crivtonencu won three games in her first set at No. 3 against Lauren Quinn (6-3, 6-0).
The Captains will now close out the regular season on Thursday, April 21 as they host North Carolina Wesleyan College at 3:00 pm.
