NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked CNU men's tennis team picked up a win over a Division I opponent on Tuesday afternoon with a 6-3 victory against Hampton University at the Eyre Courts in Newport News. Junior
Alec Strause led the way with a pair of wins for the No. 40 Captains, who improve to 9-7 on the season with the win.
In doubles action, the Captains sprinted out to a 2-1 lead when
Ashton Legum and
Ahun Vodela earned a win by default at No. 3 to pair with the CNU win at No. 1 behind
Ryan Macy and Strause. The veteran duo defeated Ange-Kevin Koua and Fayz. Mavlyudov on the top line, 8-2, to give the Captains an early lead.
Into singles play, Strause picked up his second win of the day when he toppled Cliff Dwyer (6-3, 6-1) at No. 2 singles. Strause continued his stellar career record against out-of-division competition, improving to 8-6 all-time against non-Division III opponents.
CNU earned wins at 3 and 5 with
Eddy Porsmyr Hansen and
Ashton Legum picking up the team points for the Captains. At No. 3, Porsmyr Hansen disposed of Mavlyudov in three sets (5-7, 6-1, 10-2), dominating the come from behind effort after falling in a narrow first set margin. At No. 5, Legum slipped past his opponent, Daud Gantt-Bey in the first set tiebreaker to pull out the straight set win (7-6 (5), 6-4) .
CNU also got another default victory at No. 6 for the final score, 6-3.
Christopher Newport will close out the regular season this Saturday, April 23 against Haverford College on a neutral court at 1:00 pm.
