No. 19 CNU Baseball Opens Conference Play at Mary Washington Saturday

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team will return to action with a doubleheader at the University of Mary Washington on Saturday, followed by a single game at home on Sunday at 2:00 pm against Eastern Mennonite University. The Captains will face first pitch of game one at the Eagles on Saturday at Noon.

Heading into the weekend's action, Christopher Newport is 15-6 overall including a 2-2 mark in road games. Mary Washington is 14-11 so far in 2022 with a 9-8 record at home.

For fans unable to attend the twin bill in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available for both games. Links can be found on the baseball schedule at CNUsports.com.

Christopher Newport is coming off a 3-2 setback at Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday afternoon, suffering just the team's second loss in the last 15 games. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Captains despite another exceptional pitching performance. The Tigers scored all three runs in the third inning while five pitchers combined to shut out the home team over the remaining seven frames.

So far this season, Daniel Elliott and Justin Bowers have paced the offense hitting .418 and .417, respectively. Bowers has 17 extra-base hits including a team-high six home runs and 22 runs scored. Elliott has also been a major factor on the mound, leading the team in appearances with 11 while boasting a 2-0 record with 3 saves and a 0.76 ERA.

Sophomore Scott Crosson is one of just three Captains to start all 21 games this season and has racked up 30 hits in 80 at-bats for a .375 average. He leads the team in RBI with 22 and has also scored 21 times with a perfect 6-for-6 run on the basepaths.

Having just eclipsed the halfway point of the regular season, the Captains will now open conference play against Mary Washington. The rivalry favors the Captains, 26-10, all-time including 13 of the last 14 matchups dating back through the 2018 season. CNU is 10-3 all-time in Fredericksburg.

The Eagles dropped a 7-6 decision at Bridgewater in their last contest, following a 10-4 win against Southern Virginia the day before. A young lineup is led by sophomore Ty Lowe, hitting .359 with 28 RBI and 18 runs scored. Classmate Noah Roots has blasted three home runs and delivered 20 RBI as well for the Eagles. On the mound, sophomores Brenadan McComber (3-2), Justin Ritz (1-3), and Alex Kobersteen (3-0) have done the bulk of the work for Mary Washington, with over nine strikeouts per nine innings between them.

Following Saturday's road trip, the Captains will return home to host Eastern Mennonite University in a makeup game on Sunday at 2:00 pm. Live stats and video will be available courtesy of CNUsports.com.
