Explosive Offensive Performance Leads CNU Baseball to Sixth Straight Win; Captains Down Gallaudet, 14-4

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Christopher Newport offense smashed 12 extra-base hits with seven muliti-hit performances as the Captains ran away with a 14-4 win at Gallaudet University (3-7) on Sunday afternoon. Behind the impressive hitting showcase, the Captains won the team's sixth straight and improved to 9-4 on the season.

Seven different players logged multi-hit performances including another dominating effort at the plate from newcomer Justin Bowers, going 3-for-4 with three doubles. Senior Conner Clark also had three hits with a home run and team-high three RBI. Nine different Captains picked up at least one extra-base hit in the game as CNU smacked two homers, two triples, and eight doubles in the contest.

CNU led from wire-to-wire after scoring a run in the first, two in the second, and one more in the third to open up a 4-2 advantage after three. A five-run fifth inning broke open the game for the Captains, who added one more in the sixth, again in the eighth, and three in the top of the ninth for the final score.

The Captains wasted no time jumping ahead when Clark opened the game with a hit-by-pitch and promptly stole second base. An errant throw moved him up to the third base where he was in position to score when Scott Crosson grounded out to the right side. Bowers ripped his first of three doubles in the frame and Daniel Elliott added an infield single, but Gallaudet escaped without any further damage.

In the second inning, Kyle Schofield led off with a double into right field before a two-out triple by Jonathan Fisher plated the Captains' second run of the game. Clark's second plate appearance produced an RBI single and another stolen base as CNU took a 3-0 lead. Gallaudet manufactured a pair of runs in the bottom of the second before starter Jack Anderson (1-0) induced an inning-ending double play.

Bowers and Elliott went back-to-back with another double and a single, respectively, to plate CNU's fourth run in the first three innings when they led off the top of the third. Anderson gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, but also picked up two strikeouts in the frame as he continued to cruise in his first career start.

The Captains gave their young starter all the support he would need in the fifth with a big inning against the Bison. Elliott led off with a walk and the sophomore moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Brayden Hodges. Kyle Schofield peppered the inside of the right field line for an RBI single and then raced home when Michael Martorano split the outfielders with an RBI double to the gap. Two batters later another hit for extra bases scored Martorano when Jonathan FIsher doubled down the left field line to bring Conner Clark back to the plate. Facing a 1-0 count against Galladuet's starting pitcher, Clark turned on one and left the ballpark with his third career home run.

The round-tripper put CNU ahead, 9-3, as the Captains were in a comfortable position headed for the later innings. On the mound, Anderson closed out his fifth frame with two more K's and no hits to wrap up impressive outing in his first collegiate start. The sophomore right-hander allowed just two hits and three runs, two earned, over 5.0 innings pitched. He struck out six and did not walk a batter in earning his first career win.

He gave way to four relievers who each tossed a single inning each. Jack Rosenberg struck out one in a clean sixth; Connor Pennell added two strikeouts while giving up one run in the seventh; Danny Checkosky surrendered one hit and struck out one in the eighth, and; David Gingras closed out the impressive day on the mound with a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning and one strikeout.

Bowers added his third double of the day to start the sixth inning and then came in to score on an RBI single by Martorano. Rookie Hunter Trimarchi singled and scored in the eighth on an Alec Reilly double and three more Captains got into the action in the ninth when Joey Bouck singled before a two-run homer by Shane Kelleher. Cameron Wallace doubled and Trimarchi tripled in the inning as CNU cycled in the inning as a team.

Christopher Newport improved to 9-4 while Gallaudet is now 3-7 on the season. The Captains will return to action on Monday afternoon at 2:00 pm against Hampden-Sydney College. Live stats and live video will be available at CNUsports.com
