Zoe Dyer Leads the Way as Christopher Newport Women's Lacrosse Takes Down Lynchburg, 16-11

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Erupting for seven points, including five goals, Zoe Dyer paced a lethal assault as the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team toppled Lynchburg, 16-11, during a non-conference battle on Wednesday evening at Shellenberger Field.

Continuing to torment the Hornets, Dyer has now faced Lynchburg three times in her career and has deposited at least four goals during each battle. On Wednesday, she completed a hat-trick in the first half before adding two more tallies in the fourth quarter to polish off the win.

With her showcase, Dyer moved into the program's top-10 all-time in career goals. The senior star now has 123 strikes over the past four years, which equals former legend Catie Chess for the 10th-most by a Captain.

Along with Dyer's efforts, Kelsey Winters also added seven points, including five assists. Her final helper marked the 118th of her career, tying All-American Meaghan Galvin for the second-highest total in school history. Her 48 assists this year also place her second on the single-season charts, trailing only Meghan Harkey's record-setting total of 55 from 2011.

Making a little history of her own, Syd Guidi matched her career-high with 10 draw controls, which also equaled the ninth-highest single-game total by a Captain. Incredibly, she just set her career-high four days ago in a battle with Roanoke at Jennings Family Stadium. With her performance on Wednesday, she joined former standouts Julia Golden, Sam Wettengel, and Meaghan Galvin as the only players to register at least 10 draws in back-to-back appearances.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 5-5 on the season. The setback drops Lynchburg to 3-6.

After Guidi opened the scoring just three minutes into the contest, Lynchburg responded with back-to-back strikes. Unfazed by the momentary resurgence, Winters took control. The junior assisted on two straight darts by Kendall Krause, including a nice bouncer in the middle of the period. Moments later, Winters came back again and found Dyer cutting inside for her first strike, which handed the visitors a 4-2 lead.

Still motoring along, Sloane McDonald circled around the left pipe, rolled over top of a defender, and buried a low laser into the cage to keep the momentum.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the field, the Captains settled in with a lengthy defensive stand. Near the end of the opening quarter, Joely Stevens pushed an attacker around the crease to prevent an early shot before Taylor Schoolar stoned a blast from the right side of the zone. On the Hornets' next trip down the field, Stevens brushed aside multiple rollback attempts with a fantastic ride on the left side of the field. Shortly thereafter, Emma Jackson bullied an attacker and forced an off-target attempt with some pressure along the right pipe.

In the second stanza, Guidi got things rolling with a dagger less than two minutes into the frame before Lynchburg retaliated. Battling back, the Hornets strung together their finest offensive series of the game before knotting the score at six midway through the period.

Looking for an answer, Christopher Newport pieced together a rapid-fire attack over the final six minutes of the quarter. Unleashing a barrage of shots, the visitors deposited five straight goals. Dyer had a pair of tallies, including a gorgeous play that saw her dip under the shoulder of a defender before whipping a sidewinder around the keeper from close range. She also assisted on a dart by Eleanor Collins, while Guidi added two goals of her own to snatch an 11-6 lead entering halftime.

After the break, Lynchburg attempted to chip away at its deficit, but the Captains continued to respond. In the third period, Winters and McDonald both chipped in with goals, while Schoolar had an early save to stymie a quick threat by the Hornets. Later, Jackson forced a turnover, and Riley Rafterry-Lee came up with a key ground ball to end a late rally by the hosts to sustain a 13-9 lead entering the final 15 minutes.

Still searching for a little more breathing room, Dyer lit up the net with two early goals in the fourth quarter, including an eight-meter missile. Later, after Stevens and Blake Hopkins added a pair of takeaways to halt back-to-back rallies by the Hornets, Winters landed the squad's final blow off a feed from McDonald to help polish off the 16-11 triumph.

Overall, both teams took 29 shots during the game, while Lynchburg held a slim 18-17 lead in ground balls. Meanwhile, Christopher Newport led the way in draws, 17-14, and Schoolar contributed nine saves between the pipes. Stevens also finished with a pair of caused turnovers, while Jackson, Hopkins, and Madi Rozgonyi all hauled in three ground balls apiece.

The Captains will return to action on Saturday when the squad travels to Messiah for a noon showdown.
