CNU Baseball Travels to Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday; Captains Add Sunday Home Game Against EMU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport baseball will be back in action after an extended break this Wednesday, March 30 as they travel to Hampden-Sydney College (14-5) for a 3:30 pm first pitch against the Tigers. The Captains, who have not played since last Tuesday, March 22 are riding a five-game winning streak heading into the mid-week battle.

It is the first of four games in the next five days as head coach John Harvell announced a makeup date against Eastern Mennonite University on Sunday, April 3. The Captains (15-5) will host the Royals on Sunday at 1:00 pm at Captains Park.

Christopher Newport, receiving votes in the D3baseball.com national rankings, already faced Hampden-Sydney once this season and captured a 17-3 win over the Tigers at home on Monday, March 7. The Captains lead the all-time series, 28-13-1 and average 7.98 runs per game against H-SC. Since the loss to the Captains, Hampden-Sydney has rallied for a big eight-game winning streak heading into a game today against No. 5 Lynchburg. The Tigers will also play four games over the next five days.

The Captains have won 12 of the last 13 games played dating back to a 7-2 win over top-ranked Marietta College on February 25. CNU is led by a pitching staff that ranks second nationally in K/9 with 13.4 and 15th nationally in ERA with a 3.30 mark. Daniel Elliott (2-0, 3 SV) leads the way with a 0.84 ERA in 10 appearances out of the bullpen. Jay Cassady (5-0) adds a 1.70 ERA over a team-high 37 IP while striking out 60 batters.

Offensively, Elliott also leads the team with a .415 average while newcomer Justin Bowers has paced the middle of the lineup with 21 RBI and 22 runs scored. Bowers has 17 extra-base hits including six homers and also boasts a team-best .551 on-base percentage. Sophomore Scott Crosson is hitting .382 and matches Bowers' team-leading 21 RBI on the season while also scoring 21 times.

Hampden-Sydney is hitting .296 as a team while being led by Matthew Arnold (.388) and Johnny Oates II (.386). Oates II has three HR and five doubles with 14 RBI for the Tigers this season. Justin Woodall leads the pitching staff with a 1-0 record and a 2.70 ERA over 16.2 innings pitched.
