NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will look to continue its winning ways on Sunday at 4 p.m. when the Captains welcome Whittier to town for a non-conference game at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the contest, Christopher Newport is 10-0 on the season, including 5-0 at home. Meanwhile, Whittier is 7-2 overall and 3-1 on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the contest, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. The Captains will also provide a broadcast of the game with Andy McGregor and Jake Myers calling all of the action. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
On Wednesday, Christopher Newport beat Washington & Lee, 13-8, while extending its winning streak to 10 straight games. That stands as the longest run in program history, eclipsing the nine-game roll by the 2018 squad. It also ranks as the second-longest active streak in the country, trailing only RIT's 25-game roll dating back to last year.
During the victory over the Generals, five Captains notched multi-goal efforts, including hat-tricks by
Dylan Rice,
Brady Altobello, and
Andrew Cook. With his performance, Altobello became just the fifth player in program history to reach 100 career goals, joining an exclusive club alongside Rice and former legends Matt Crist, Randy Foster, and Will Geise.
Meanwhile, on the other end of the field,
Burke Widhelm came through with a career-high six caused turnovers. That equaled the seventh-highest single-game total in program history. Additionally,
Max Wayne and
Jackson Deal had three takeaways apiece.
Overall this season, Wayne ranks second in the NCAA with 31 caused turnovers, and
Phoenix Hines sits fourth with 29. The two defensive juggernauts also made some history together on Wednesday. The victory over the Generals marked their 74th career appearance. That moved them past Drew Cornell for the most games played in school history.
Making the most of his time on the field, Hines also inched closer to joining another historic club with his work against Washington & Lee. The fifth-year senior collected three ground balls, pushing his career total to 196. He is now just four shy of becoming the fourth Captain to reach 200 career ground balls, which would place his name alongside Ari Elgort, Tony Cruz, and Teddy Pekalski.
Whittier comes into Sunday following a 25-5 setback at No. 2 Salisbury on Saturday. Against the Sea Gulls, five different Poets registered at least one goal, including two points by Ronan Dooney. Meanwhile, Drew Low came through with 13 saves in 45 minutes of work, and Joshua Peavey won 11 of his 16 faceoff attempts.
The Poets currently rank fourth in the NCAA in faceoff percentage with a .670 success rate. Tristan Keyser has won 63 of his 95 attempts, while Peavey has 69 wins in 101 battles. On the offensive end, Cameron Bentley has a team-high 37 points and 29 goals, while Dooney has handed out 12 assists. On the back side, Low has a .571 save percentage and 10.59 goals-against-average.
Sunday's game will mark the third all-time meeting between the Captains and Poets. Both squads have one win in the series, including an 8-5 triumph by Christopher Newport during the most recent battle on March 18, 2013. Coincidentally, the winning goalie in that contest was Andy McGregor, who will be broadcasting Sunday's game alongside Jake Myers, who also saw action on the midfield unit during that game.
Following this weekend's showdown, Christopher Newport will complete its three-game homestand against No. 17 Williams on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
