NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Zac Hanway has been named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week and will look to continue his recent run of dominance on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when he leads the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team into a showdown with Washington & Lee at Jennings Family Stadium.

The weekly award is the second of Hanway's career after he was previously celebrated as the league's top defensive standout on March 8, 2021.

Earning the recognition for a tremendous performance during last week's Mustang Classic, Hanway starred between the pipes while helping the Captains post a pair of victories over top-10 opponents. During the tournament, the junior goalkeeper made 25 saves while compiling a 10.77 goals-against-average against two of the top offenses in the nation. He also finished with a .543 save percentage in just under 117 minutes of action during the week.

Kicking off his award-winning run on Friday, Hanway collected 13 saves during a 17-11 victory over No. 10 Gettysburg. Six of his stops came in the first half as the Captains built a commanding 11-0 lead on the way to the lopsided victory.

Less than 24 hours later, Hanway came back with 12 more saves in a 17-13 win over No. 7 Lynchburg. Once again, his work was integral in the early part of the game as Christopher Newport stormed out to a 13-4 lead. Seven of his saves came while the Captains built that nine-goal edge before he contributed three crucial stops in the fourth quarter to help snuff out Lynchburg's comeback attempt.

Overall this season, Hanway has a .530 save percentage and 8.93 goals-against-average in nine starts.

Aided by Hanway's efforts this year, Christopher Newport enters the week with a pristine 9-0 record, which equals the 2018 squad for the best start in program history. The Captains also boast a 4-0 record at home, while Washington & Lee enters Wednesday at 4-4 overall and 1-2 on the road.

For those fans unable to attend the midweek match-up, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. The Captains will also provide a broadcast of the contest with Andy McGregor and Jake Myers calling all of the action. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Coming into Wednesday, Christopher Newport continues to rank among the top teams in the nation in a variety of categories. Offensively, the Captains sit second in the nation in goals per game (19.44) and 18th in shooting percentage (.342). Meanwhile, on the other end, the squad is fourth in takeaways per contest (17.44) and ground balls per game (47.44). The team has also converted 87 percent of its clears this year, which ranks 21st in the NCAA.

Washington & Lee enters the contest following a 15-6 victory over Randolph-Macon in which Nick Spagnoletti recorded 15 saves. Overall this season, the senior is 31st in the NCAA in save percentage (.624) and 32nd in goals-against-average (8.15). Meanwhile, as a team, the Generals are 19th in the country with 108 total saves.

Offensively, Washington & Lee is led by Henry Holliday, who has a team-high 16 points. Taylor Witherell also has 11 goals, while Michael Ott has nine strikes and six assists. The Generals have also won 56 percent of their faceoffs in 2022 with Matt Gallagher securing 68 of his 120 opportunities.

In nine previous meetings between the two programs, W&L holds a 6-3 edge in the series. Christopher Newport won last year's battle, 14-13, in overtime. Alex Brendes landed five goals during that game, including the final dagger in the 62nd minute. Meanwhile, Hanway came through with nine saves on the defensive side.

Following Wednesday's tilt, Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday with a 4 p.m. showdown against Whittier.
