Daniel Elliott Named C2C Baseball Player of the Week; Captains Announce Schedule Changes Including Road Trip Tuesday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport sophomore utility man Daniel Elliott was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for his performance both on the mound and at the plate in two games last week. Head coach John Harvell also announced schedule changes for this week including a makeup game on the road Tuesday at North Carolina Wesleyan College; the Captains (14-5) will face the first pitch at 2:00 pm.

Elliott is the third different CNU player to collect C2C Player of the Week honors this season while two more have earned Pitcher of the Week accolades. Elliott secured the top player designation after Scott Crosson and Justin Bowers each collected the recognition earlier this season.

At the plate, Elliott had a monster game against Roanoke College in a 12-3 win over the Maroons, driving in five while going 4-for-5 with a couple of runs scored. For the week, Elliott hit .500 and saw his season's batting average settle at .420 through his first 17 games played. While proving a tough out at the plate, Elliott has also been the anchor to a dominant Captains' bullpen all season long. This week, he appeared in both games against Roanoke and Virginia Wesleyan, striking out seven batters in 4.1 innings of work. He allowed just two hits without a walk and shut down both opposing offenses without allowing a run.

This season, Elliott's ERA has plummeted to a team-best 0.90 in a team-high nine appearances. He has 35 strikeouts in 20.0 innings pitched and is currently riding a 12.1 inning scoreless streak. Elliott is 2-0 with two saves for the Captains' pitching staff.

The Captains were originally scheduled to face Eastern Mennonite University at home on Tuesday, but that game, in addition to the road trip to William Peace on March 24. Instead, the Captains slotted in a makeup date against North Carolina Wesleyan College and will play the Battling Bishops at 2:00 p.m.

CNU edged NCWC, 6-4, in the first meeting this season while pounding out four extra-base hits. Justin Bowers doubled and homered while Jonathan Fisher added a three-run blast in the game. Kevin Mackmin also doubled in the game as the potent Christopher Newport attack was just heating up for a stretch that has seen them win 14 of the last 16 games. The Captains are hitting .298 as a team with 56 extra-base hits. Bowers leads the power surge with six home runs and 17 extra-base hits on his own, while also leading the team with a .444 average.

The Bishops have struggled to a 10-8 start against tough competition, but have rallied to win three straight with a sweep over Southern Virginia University. N.C. Wesleyan is led offensively by Davie Morgan, hitting .339 with 13 RBI and 23 runs scored. Senior lefty Derrick Carter is 3-0 with a team-best 2.60 ERA in 34.2 innings pitched to lead the Bishops rotation.

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available from Rocky Mount on Tuesday. Links can be found on the baseball schedule at CNUsports.com.
