Christopher Newport Baseball Hosts Virginia Wesleyan in Cross-Water Rivalry Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team will continue it's six-game homestand on Sunday afternoon as they welcome in cross-water rival Virginia Wesleyan University (10-6) to Captains Park at 1:00 p.m.

CNU has won three straight and ten of the last 11 to improve to 13-5 on the season. The Captains are coming off a 12-3 win over Roanoke College on Tuesday afternoon following a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Harrisburg two days prior.

The all-time series between the two teams narrowly favors the Captains, 31-29, and Christopher Newport has won five straight for the longest win streak in series history. The Captains are 19-12 at home against VWU.

This season newcomer Justin Bowers has paced the offense with a .460 average and 16 extra-base hits including five home runs. Slugging 1.020 this season, Bowers was named to the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week earlier this week and leads the team in scoring with 20 runs this season.

Sophomore Daniel Elliott is hitting .447, ranking seocond on the team, and has also been the top bullpen arm for the Captains with a 1.00 ERA while going 2-0 with two saves. Elliott has struck out 33 batters in 18 IP while appearing in eight games on the mound. Sophomore Jay Cassady (4-0) is the team's leader in the rotation, striking out 50 batters in his first 30 IP with a 2.10 ERA.

Virginia Wesleyan split with Bridgewater on Saturday, dropping a 15-5 decision before winning 12-1 in the second game of the twin bill. Offensively, Trent Hachey leads the squad with a .404 average with 16 RBI and 19 runs scored. Jake Ness is hitting .341 while Jaelen Hines has already scored 26 times this season while hitting .324 for the Marlins. The team has struggled on the mound, posting a 6.14 team ERA so far this season.
