NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport's
Justin Bowers and
Jay Cassady were named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week on Monday after helping the Captains' baseball team win three of four games last week and run the team's overall record to 12-5. CNU is set to return to the diamond on Tuesday as they play host to Roanoke College at 3:00 pm.
Bowers reached base in 73.7 percent of his plate appearances last week with seven hits and seven walks while hitting in the middle of the Captains lineup. He slugged 1.250 with a pair of home runs and two doubles while driving in seven and scoring eight times. Leading an offensive surge at the plate, Bowers finished the four-game week with 15 total bases while hitting .583 for the Captains.
In the first game of the week, Bowers was 1-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored. He then reached base in all five plate appearances against Randolph-Macon College on Thursday, going 1-for-1 with a double and four walks. In a doubleheader sweep against Penn State Harrisburg, Bowers played a big role in a come-from-behind walk-off win in game one before also assisting in a blowout effort in game two. He combined to go 5-for-7 with 7 RBI and 4 runs scored in the twin bill while blasting his fourth and fifth home runs of the season.
Earning Conference Pitcher of the Week plaudits for the second time this season, Christopher Newport's sophomore southpaw struck out 13 batters in a win against Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday afternoon. Cassady scattered six hits and one run over six innings pitched while reaching double digit strikeouts for the third time in four starts this season.
Cassady improved to 3-0 with a team-best 1.48 ERA after the effort. He has struck out 45 batters in 24.1 innings pitched while issuing just four free passes through his first five appearances.
The two honored Captains and the rest of the team will be back in action on Tuesday as they play host to Roanoke College (6-6) at 2:00 pm. The Maroons are coming off a pair of losses to Lynchburg on Sunday after winning four straight including a three-game sweep against Case Western Reserve.
This will be just the third all-time matchup between the two teams as each team won on their opponents home field in the first two games over the last two seasons. Both games were decided by a single run with Roanoke winning 5-4 at Captains Park in 2020 before CNU rallied in the ninth inning against the Maroons last season to win 8-7.
