NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After spending the last two weeks on the road, the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will return home on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the Captains battle Grove City in a non-conference test at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the midweek match-up, Christopher Newport sits at 3-0 on the season, including 1-0 at home. Meanwhile, Grove City is 2-1 overall and 1-1 in road tilts.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. The Captains will also provide a broadcast of the contest with Andy McGregor and Randy Foster calling all of the action. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is coming off of a 19-7 victory at No. 20 Hampden-Sydney on Saturday. Against the Tigers,
Drew Miller erupted for six points and was celebrated as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Meanwhile, five other players also added multi-goal efforts, including hat-tricks by
Brady Altobello,
Andrew Cook, and
Jackson Deal.
Along with the offensive standouts,
Warner Cabaniss helped control possession throughout the game. The freshman faceoff specialist won 16 of his 23 battles, including six straight in the first quarter as the Captains built a comfortable five-goal advantage. Overall, his 16 victories marked the most against a nationally-ranked opponent since former All-American Tony Cruz won 17 against No. 20 Washington & Lee on February 14, 2018.
Cabaniss also hauled in 10 ground balls against the Tigers, equaling the highest total by a Captain since
Phoenix Hines collected 11 against Virginia Wesleyan on March 19, 2019.
So far this season, Christopher Newport has featured a well-balanced roster that has excelled on both ends of the field. Currently, the Captains rank third in the NCAA in both assists per game (14.33) and takeaways per game (21.00). The team's 18.33 goals-per-game average also leads the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference and places the squad 13th on the national charts.
On an individual level,
Phoenix Hines and
Ryan Young are tied for second in the country with 12 caused turnovers apiece.
Dylan Rice's 21 points also place him seventh in the NCAA, while Cabaniss' .718 faceoff percentage is the 18th-best mark in the country.
Grove City enters Wednesday after dropping a hard-fought 11-10 overtime decision at Baldwin Wallace. The Wolverines rallied from an 8-0 deficit to force the extra session, but the hosts scored with six seconds left in the first overtime period to snatch the win.
During that game, Brett Gladstone led Grove City with five points, including four goals in the fourth quarter. Overall, he currently leads the Wolverines with 12 goals, six assists, and 18 points this season. Meanwhile, Grant Evans has won 71 percent of his faceoffs in 2022, while Jack Petit and Danny Stone have split time between the pipes and helped the squad compile a 10.77 goals-against-average.
Grove City is currently receiving votes in the USILA National Coaches Poll and boasts a 22-14 win over No. 14 Colorado College earlier this season. The Wolverines finished last year with an 11-2 record and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship.
Wednesday's game will mark the first-ever meeting between Grove City and Christopher Newport.
Following the midweek match-up, the Captains will return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. trip to Catholic.
