No. 6 Christopher Newport Men's Lacrosse Rolls Past No. 20 Hampden-Sydney, 19-7, in Nationally-Ranked Showdown

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- The sixth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team stormed out to an early lead and never looked back as the Captains cruised to a 19-7 victory over No. 20 Hampden-Sydney during a non-conference showdown on Saturday afternoon at Everett Stadium.

Showcasing a well-balanced attack, six Captains notched multi-goal efforts against the Tigers, including four hat-tricks. Drew Miller led the way with six points, while Brady Altobello, Andrew Cook, and Jackson Deal added three strikes as well. With his performance on Saturday, Altobello also moved into fifth on the program's all-time goals list with his 87th career dagger.

While the offense was doing damage throughout the game, Warner Cabaniss made sure Christopher Newport kept possession of the ball. The freshman starred at the 'X' while winning 16 of his 23 faceoff attempts. He also corralled 10 ground balls, which equaled the most by a Captain since Phoenix Hines picked up 11 against Virginia Wesleyan on March 19, 2019.

Hines was also impressive on Saturday as the reigning All-American hauled in five rollers while registering three takeaways. Aidan Wheeler also caused two turnovers of his own.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 3-0 on the season. The setback drops Hampden-Sydney to 1-1.

Less than 30 seconds into regulation, the Captains snatched a lead after Altobello deposited the game's first goal. Shortly thereafter, Cook blasted two of his own, while Alex Brendes slammed home his first strike of the game to secure a 4-0 lead. Although the hosts eventually lit up the scoreboard in the seventh minute, Christopher Newport continued to control the tempo.

Cabaniss won back-to-back faceoffs, which led to two straight goals by Miller and Coby Auslander. Later, Miller set up Rice's first goal of the game in the waning moments of the first quarter, which helped lock up a 7-2 lead.

Although the hosts managed to open the second period with a man-up tally, Christopher Newport put the game away with a rapid-fire assault. Unloading from all over the field, four different Captains found the back of the cage during a five-minute onslaught. Miller, Deal, Cook, and Altobello all hung goals on the board to push the squad's advantage to 11-3 with five minutes remaining in the first half. Later, Miller answered Hampden-Sydney's fourth goal with his third dart of the game to grab a 12-4 edge entering the break.

Following halftime, the visitors picked up right where they left off. Torching the back of the net, the Captains pushed their lead to double-digits less than five minutes into the second half. During the early surge, Altobello polished off his hat-trick, while Rice, Deal, and Brendes continued their work on the offensive end while grabbing a 16-4 advantage.

Piecing together a momentary response, Hampden-Sydney retaliated with back-to-back strikes, but Deal finished off the third period with his final dagger, which helped keep an 11-goal edge entering the final 15 minutes.

Holding a comfortable advantage, Christopher Newport wrapped up the victory with two final goals as Carson Hoffman and Luke Nardone joined the party to lock down the lopsided win.

Overall, the Captains held a 60-27 advantage in shots and a 34-13 lead in ground balls. Christopher Newport also won 18 of the game's 29 faceoffs, while Zac Hanway and Andrew Clark combined for five saves between the pipes.

The Captains will return to action on Wednesday when the team hosts Grove City at 4 p.m.
