SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will open it's 2022 postseason run on Friday afternoon as it takes on #4 Mary Washington (18-8) at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz, Calif at Noon locally (3:00 pm EST). The Captains (22-0) will take on the Eagles for the third time this season as the two teams take the floor of the Golden State Warriors G-League Affiliate in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals.
The tournament is being hosted by C2C Member UC Santa Cruz, who will take on the #3 seed Salisbury University in the other semifinal matchup on Friday. The two winning teams will then advance to Saturday afternoon's conference championship game set for 1:00 pm.
Christopher Newport is riding a 39-game winning streak including a perfect 22-0 regular season this season. The Captains have also won the last two conference championships that were held by the league and three of the last four. This will be the third time the Captains and Eagles face off in the conference tournament semifinal round with the two teams splitting the previous two matchups. It will be only the fourth time the two teams have played in postseason play since the Captains joined the league in 2013-14 and will also serve as the first ever neutral site matchup between the two programs.
The Captains are led by Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year
Sondra Fan, who hauled in the hardware earlier this week as the top player in the league. She was joined on the first team All-Conference squad by her veteran front court with senior
Natalie Terwilliger and junior
Anaya Simmons earning the accolades. All three are averaging double figures heading into the postseason led by Fan's 14.0 points per game. The Captains' offense has been extremely efficient this season, ranking third nationally in field-goal percentage led by Simmons. The Williamsburg, Va. native ranks second nationally in efficiency, knocking down over 63% of her shots. Terwilliger capped a strong season overall with perhaps the finest performance of her career in CNU's last game, scoring 25 points and grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds.
The contributions continue to come up and down the lineup, though, with starters
Gabbi San Diego and
Phylicia McInnis leading the team in minutes. San Diego is ranked 17th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio and ranks third among underclassmen so far this season. McInnis is a dangerous three-point shooter, knocking down 38 triples this season, as is classmate and reserve guard
Jessica Foster, with 32 made from beyond the arc.
Mary Washington will counter the Captains with a strong starting group that includes a pair of All-Conference selections in Tory Martin and Jordan Carpenter. Carpenter is averaging 9.5 points and 9.9 rebounds per game so far this season and Martin's veteran presence up front has added a team-high 10.3 points per game.
