LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- After piecing together a historic showcase for the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team on Saturday,
Ryan Young continued to stockpile awards for his efforts after earning a spot on the USILA National Team of the Week, which was announced on Tuesday afternoon by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.
The national honor comes after Young was named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Earning the recognition for his performance against Randolph-Macon on Saturday, Young stifled the competition with a record-tying defensive performance. During the 60-minute masterpiece, he registered eight caused turnovers. That equaled the program record set by Brandon Moloney against Southern Virginia on April 19, 2016 and matched by Drew Cornell against Virginia Wesleyan on March 19, 2019.
His eight takeaways against the Yellow Jackets also marked the most by a Captain on the road in program history.
Setting the tone early, Young caused three turnovers in the opening quarter, including one that helped jumpstart Christopher Newport's first successful scoring opportunity. Later, he came back with another takeaway in the second period, three more in the third, and one final strip in the fourth stanza.
Three of his takeaways eventually led to possessions that produced goals on the other side of the field as the Captains secured the 14-12 victory.
In addition to his eight caused turnovers, the Broadlands, Virginia native also collected eight ground balls against RMC. That marked the most by a non-faceoff specialist in two years.
So far this season, Young leads the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference with 11 caused turnovers after notching three in the opener against Roanoke on February 12. His 13 ground balls also place him on top of the league leaderboard.
Young and the rest of his teammates will return to action on Saturday when Christopher Newport travels to Hampden-Sydney for a 1 p.m. test.
