NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The last game of the regular season for the nation's top-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University will be played at the Freeman Center on Saturday night against Salisbury University (19-4). Six seniors for the 21-0 Captains will be honored in a pre-game ceremony before opening tip at approximately 6:00 p.m.
Taking the floor at C.J. Woollum Court in the Freeman Center for the 33rd time in 82 career games played, the senior class is one of the most accomplished groups in program history.
Sondra Fan,
Jessica Foster,
Julia Hobbs,
Julia Ng,
Phylicia McInnis, and
Natalie Terwilliger have combined to win 71 of 81 games played through their first three seasons with one year from their ledger eliminated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The seniors contributed to back-to-back conference championships and a pair of Sweet 16 finishes in the NCAA Tournament.Â
Along the way, the Captains' sextet helped lead CNU to the highest national ranking in program history earlier this season when CNU took control of the No. 1 position in both the D3hoops.com and WBCA national polls. CNU has been ranked No. 1 for three straight weeks while riding the nation's longest active winning streak at 38 consecutive games. It is the longest win streak in CNU Athletics history and includes the second-longest home winning streak for CNU Women's Basketball.Â
For fans unable to attend in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com. The game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., immediately following the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Christopher Newport will look to wrap up the 2021-22 regular season slate unscathed when it takes on conference rival Salisbury University on Saturday night. The Sea Gulls provide a challenging test for the Captains as Salisbury is 19-4 this season with all four losses coming to teams currently ranked in the Top 25. One of those setbacks came at the hands of Christopher Newport in Maryland when the Captains edged out Salisbury, 63-57.Â
CNU is led by the dangerous inside-out combo of
Anaya Simmons and
Sondra Fan, currently combining for over 27 of the team's 87 points per game. Inside, Simmons ranks third in the nation in field-goal percentage by knocking down 63% of her shots and her senior teammate in the backcourt ranks in the top-five nationally in three-point field goal percentage, hitting 44.8% of her three's. Fan leads the squad with 14.5 points per game while Simmons is pouring in 12.8.Â
The Captains' depth continues to be a strength with only two players averaging more than 19.4 minutes per game and seven players scoring at least six points per game.
Phylicia McInnis is scoring 7.2 points per game while leading the teams in game time while sophomore point guard
Gabbi San Diego has added 6.5 points and 3.6 assists per game at the point.Â
Salisbury will counter with an extremely veteran lineup, including four seniors and a junior in the starting five. Kaylee Otlowski averages nearly a double-double up front for the Sea Gulls, with a team-leading 14.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Like the Captains, she has a veteran shooter that helps spread the floor as senior Lauren Fortescue is adding 12.3 points per game while knocking down 1.2 three-pointers per game.Â
Following Saturday's regular season finale, the Captains will turn it's focus to the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship, hosted by UC Santa Cruz next weekend. Seedings will be formally announced on Monday.Â
