CNU Baseball Hosts Susquehanna and North Carolina Wesleyan This Weekend for Home Opener

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Opening the doors to Captains Park for the first time in 2022, the Christopher Newport baseball team will play three games this weekend against Susquehanna University and No. 19 North Carolina Wesleyan College. The Captains (0-3) will toss out the first pitch on Friday, February 18 at 2:00 p.m. against the River Hawks before playing two on Saturday.

The rest of the weekend's schedule will feature the Captains against Susquehanna at 11:00 am on Saturday followed by a matchup against the nationally-ranked Bishops at 2:00 pm. On Sunday, the two out-of-town teams will face off in a neutral site matchup at Noon.

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for all four contests at CNUsports.com. Links can be found on the baseball schedule.

Christopher Newport will take on Susquehanna for the eighth time after winning six of the first seven pairings between the two teams. In a series that has stood for much longer, the Captains trail N.C. Wesleyan, 41-57, in the all-time matchup.

This season, Scott Crosson is leading the offense with six hits in 12 at-bats during the opening weekend. Jay Cassady added four hits and nine total bases at the plate while also putting together the best start on the mound for the Captains with 10 strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched.

Susquehanna will be opening the season with a 54-player roster including sixth-year infielder Chris Corrado. The All-Conference player leads a young squad. N.C. Wesleyan is 2-2 to start the year after dropping two of three to Bridgewater the opening weekend before defeating Ferrum, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman pitcher Dylan Cheeley has led the way for N.C. Wesleyan, striking out seven in five innings of one-hit ball in his collegiate debut. Offensively, sophomore Zach Scott has five hits including a pair of doubles so far.

Following this weekend's action, the Captains will return to action on Wednesday, February 23 against Bridgewater.
