LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Continuing to stockpile awards after leading the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team to a season-opening victory over Roanoke on Saturday,
Phoenix Hines and
Dylan Rice were named to the USILA National Team of the Week, which was announced on Tuesday afternoon by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.
Previously, both standouts were recognized by the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference on Monday as Hines was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week, while Rice was celebrated as the top offensive contributor.
The national honor is the first for Hines, while Rice was previously named to the USILA National Team of the Week on February 20, 2018, March 10, 2020, and May 4, 2021. He is the first four-time honoree in program history.
Headlining the squad's defensive efforts, Hines continued to star as a long-pole specialist during Christopher Newport's 22-5 win over Roanoke. Suffocating the opposition, he caused five turnovers, which equaled the most by any Captain since he had six takeaways against Hampden-Sydney on February 22, 2020. It also equaled the third-highest total of his All-American career.
Making a consistent impact throughout the game, the Ashburn, Virginia native forced a turnover in each of the first two quarters before registering three takeaways in the third. Overall, he helped lead a defense that finished with 32 total caused turnovers, which fell just three shy of matching the single-game program record.
Along with his work on the defensive unit, Hines also starred as a wing on faceoffs. He collected a pair of ground balls and helped the Captains win 24 faceoff attempts, which equaled the fourth-highest total in school history.
On the other end of the field, Rice tormented the Maroons with a record-setting offensive assault. The fifth-year star established a new school standard with eight goals, breaking the previous mark of seven set by Andrew Evans against Tri-State on March 8, 2008. He also added a pair of assists while finishing with 10 total points. That equaled his own school record set against St. Mary's (Md.) on May 1, 2021.
After opening the scoring less than a minute into regulation, Rice came back with two assists before unleashing a remarkable onslaught against Roanoke. During the second and third quarters, he fired seven total shots. Each of those attempts eventually found the back of the net, including four straight tallies during a four-minute surge at the end of the third period.
In addition to his offensive heroics, the Mechanicsville, Virginia native also matched his career-high with four caused turnovers while chipping in with a pair of ground balls.
Rice, Hines, and the rest of the Captains will be back in action on Saturday at noon for a road test at Randolph-Macon.
