No. 1 Christopher Newport Triples Up Pratt Institute, 90-30, in C2C Showcase Classic Finale

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Alivia Giles led a deep and balanced offensive showing against Pratt Institute (5-12) on Sunday afternoon, as the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team rushed past the Cannoneers, 90-30. Giles scored 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting to lead the team in scoring while junior Anaya Simmons was 6-for-6 from the floor for 12 points in just 10 minutes of action. 

The Captains' tormenting defense forced 30 turnovers and held Pratt to single digits in two of the four quarters, including just two points allowed in the entire third quarter. CNU allowed only 10 made field goals and a 3-for-21 shooting effort (14.3%) in the second half. For the game, Pratt shot just 22.7% (10-44), marking the lowest field-goal percentage against for the Captains since holding Mary Washington to just 19.3% (11-57) on January 17, 2018. 

The C2C Showcase Classic All-Tournament Team was announced following the win, including a pair of Captains on the squad. Rookie Hannah Kaloi earned a spot as did the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, Sondra Fan. Fan scored just three points in Sunday's matchup but torched the nets in Saturday's marquee matchup against UC Santa Cruz for 23 total points. The CNU dueo were joined on the All-Tournament Team by Kaylee Murphy (UCSC), Tory Martin (UMW), and Katy O'Connor (Pratt). 

Only one starter played more than 14 minutes in Sunday's matchup with Gabbi San Diego seeing 17 minutes of action. All 13 available players for CNU played at least 10 minutes with only Jessica Foster and Katy Rader logging more than 20 minutes of action as the Captains showed off it's depth. 

CNU raced out to 17-7 lead after the first quarter and built a 39-18 advantage at halftime. A 28-2 run to start the second half included an 0-for-8 quarter from the field with 10 turnovers by Pratt. In the third period, Conversely, CNU knocked down 11 field goals with five three-pointers to race away from the Cannoneers. Phylicia McInnis buried a pair of triples while San Diego, Rader, and Jovia Winkey each added one apiece. Inside, Simmons was 3-for-3 for six of her 12 points. 

The Captains dished 23 assists on 35 made baskets and were led by rookie Lexi White with six dimes. She added six points, five rebounds, and two steals in a breakout performance by the rookie. Kaloi just missed double figures with nine points while adding four rebounds as well. 

Joining Simmons and Giles in double figures was freshman forward Hannah Orloff, who added 10 points with three rebounds and a blocked shot. Up front, seniors Julia Hobbs and Julia Ng combined for five rebounds to help CNU outrebound Pratt, 38-33. 

For the game, Christopher Newport shot 50.7% and won by a margin of 60 points, marking the fourth time this season the Captains have won by 60 or more. It was also the team's seventh wire-to-wire win this season. 

The Captains have just one game left on the regular season schedule as the team returns home for Senior Night on Saturday, February 19 at 6:00 pm. The six CNU seniors will be celebrated as part of the final matchup of the regular season, which will be played against Salisbury University.
