NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University returns to the hardwood Thursday as the Captains Shootout gets underway at the Freeman Center. CNU, ranked seventh in the country with an 11-2 record so far, will host Cabrini University in a 5:00 p.m. tip-off. Averett University and Wilmington College (OH) will open the two-day classic in a 3:00 p.m. start.
John Krikorian's squad will be coming off a seven-day holiday break after winning back-to-back games in Charlotte, N.C., in the Jay Bilas Classic last week. The Captains defeated Elmhurst (IL) and the College of New Jersey in the tourney at Queens University of Charlotte to improve to 11-2.
Thursday's game with Cabrini will be just the third meeting ever of the two programs. The Cavaliers won the first two matchups in 1991 and 1993 over the Captains, both in December tournaments on neutral courts Cabrini is 4-6 so far this season, and the Cavs are coming off an 86-60 home victory over Goucher College on December 19th.
The Shootout continues on Friday with Averett (6-5) playing Cabrini at 1:00 p.m., and the Captains taking on Wilmington (3-6) at 5:00 p.m. The Christopher Newport women's team will also be at home Friday afternoon, in the middle game of a triple-header, for a 3:00 p.m. start vs. Rowan.
All Captains games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM). The pre-game show will begin at approximately 4:40 p.m. Thursday afternoon..
