NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
Christopher Newport University will play for the first time ever as the top team in the country on Saturday, as the Captains travel to Danville to take on Averett University. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at E. Stuart Grant Center.

D3hoops.com released its first in-season poll on Monday night, and the Captains moved into the top spot after being ranked fourth in the pre-season poll. It marked the first time ever a CNU men's basketball squad has been ranked in the top position. The Captains are 7-0 to start the season, and won two games last weekend at home to capture the CNU Invitational Tournament, beating Sarah Lawrence and North Carolina Wesleyan.

Junior All-American Jahn Hines continues to lead the Captains, and is now averaging 17.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Hines was selected Most Valuable Player of the Invitational last Sunday after scoring 24 points in the title game. Junior Trey Barber is ninth in the country in blocked shots with 24 in seven games, and is also scoring 10.4 points and pulling down 7.6 boards per contest.

Averett has a record of 5-2 heading into Saturday's play. The Cougars are coming off a 71-67 loss at Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday night that snapped a five-game winning streak. The game will be the 90th in the all-time series, and the Captains hold a 72-17 advantage. Christopher Newport defeated Averett last season on December 4th at the Freeman Center, 76-54, and the Captains have won eight straight games over the Cougars. The teams were former league-mates in the Dixie and USA South Athletic Conferences, and the series dates back to December of 1976.

Last weekend also saw the Captains capture their 1,000th game in program history with Saturday's victory over Sarah Lawrence. CNU is in its 55th season of action, and the Captains are now 1,001-461 all-time for a .685 winning percentage.

All Captains games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM). The pre-game show will begin at 3:40 p.m. Saturday afternoon. A live video stream of the action will be provided by Averett and can be accessed by clicking the link at the top of this story. You can also follow the live stats of the games with the link provided above, and also access the complete CNU game notes package.
