SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The undefeated Christopher Newport women's basketball team heads out of the country to put its pristine 9-0 record on the line this week with a pair of games in the Puerto Rico Clásico. The nationally-ranked Captains will face off against Colorado College on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. locally, 5:00 p.m. Eastern, and will close the trip against SUNY Cortland on Monday night at 8:00/7:00 p.m.
It will be the first trip out of the contiguous United States since participating in the 2017-18 Hoop 'N Surf Classic in Hawaii. The trip to the Caribbean will be the first international trip for the Captains in program history.Â
Each game will also be the first matchup between the Captains and each of their two opponents. First, CNU will take on the Tigers of Colorado College, who come in with a 5-4 overall record. All four of the team's losses came in the first five games with three coming against teams that are currently at least receiving votes in the national rankings. On Monday, CNU will face another talented opponent in Cortland, who has run off eight straight wins since a season-opening overtime loss to nationally-ranked Ithaca.Â

Christopher Newport enters the trip with a 9-0 record overall while ranking No. 2 in the WBCA Top 25 and No. 5 in the D3hoops.com national rankings. CNU leads the nation in scoring margin, outpacing opponents by an average of 46.7 points per game so far this season. The Captains have five 50+ point wins so far this season while featuring the third-ranked scoring offense and seventh-ranked scoring defense in the country.Â

Anaya Simmons leads the squad with 13.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Following close behdind, senior guard
Sondra Fan is pouring in 12.4 points per game. In CNU's last game, Fan moved into the top-15 all-time in career points, with 1,183, passing Camry Green on the all-time scoring chart. She sits just seven points shy of No. 14 on the list, Tomorrow Lofton.Â
Colorado College enters the game with a top-25 scoring offense, averaging 76 points per game, while led by a dangerous point guard in Anna Fanelli. Fanelli ranks second nationally in assists-per-game and in the top-40 in assist-to-turnover ratio as she prepares to face the Captains Chaos defense. Zoe Tomlinson is a factor inside, leading Division III in field-goal percentage (.671) and ranks in the top-60 nationally in both points and rebounds per game.Â
SUNY Cortland is another team that takes care of the basketball, limiting their turnovers to just 14.4 per game before facing CNU's suffocating defense that forces over 30 per contest. Emily Morano is a threat from long range, knocking down 45.7 percent from beyond the arc while leading the team with 15.7 points per game.Â
Following the trip to Puerto Rico, the Captains will return home for a December 30 game against Rowan at 1:00 p.m.Â
