NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The series started in the very first season of Christopher Newport University men's basketball in 1968. Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Batten Center in Virginia Beach, the Captains and the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan University will meet for the 89th time on the hardwood. And both teams are off to great starts, setting the stage for what shapes up to be an entertaining and exciting battle, an early Christmas present for local college basketball fans..
The Captains are 9-1 and the top-ranked team in the country for the third straight week.
John Krikorian's squad is fresh off its first loss of the year Tuesday night at the Freeman Center to Hampden-Sydney College, 85-70. The defeat ended a nine-game winning streak to open the year, and a 22-game home winning streak. The Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan are 10-1 heading into Thursday night's tilt, and have won four straight games since losing to Randolph-Macon on November 30th, 66-49.Â
For the record, the Captains lead the all-time series with their cross-water rival, 52-36, and recorded an 80-72 victory last season over the Marlins at the Freeman Center. The teams will be meeting for the 40th time in Virginia Beach, and the Captains are 23-16 all-time playing at VWU.
