NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -Â Christopher Newport University junior guard
Jahn Hines was honored Monday as the Player of the Week in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference. It's the third time this season Hines has received the accolade, and the second straight week he's been celebrated.
Hines, from Norview High School in Norfolk, led the Captains to a home victory over Marymount on Sunday, the ninth-straight win for the top-ranked team in the country. He topped the Captains in points (18) and rebounds (8), and netted 12 of his 18 points in the second half as the squad pulled away to a 15-point victory, 81-66. Hines was 9-of-16 from the field and also recorded five assists, two blocks, and a steal in 32 minutes of action. Hines is averaging 18.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest for
John Krikorian's squad.
The Captains are in the midst of a busy five-day stretch that will see them hit the hardwood three times. Tuesday night at the Freeman Center, the Captains will host the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
H-SC has a record of 6-3 and the Tigers have won four-straight contests, including their most recent game at Lynchburg, 89-72, last Wednesday. The Tigers have three players averaging in double-figure scoring among six that are scoring at least 7.3 points per game. CNU and Hampden-Sydney will be meeting for the 14th time, and the Captains have an 8-5 edge in the series. The teams met last year at H-SC, and Christopher Newport came away with a 79-74 victory. Previously, the squads had not met since the 1997 NCAA Tournament, when the Captains also registered a 79-74 triumph over the Tigers.Â
The Captains will carry a 22-game home winning streak into Tuesday's game, after going 17-0 last year and 5-0 so far this year at the Freeman Center.
All Captains games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM). The pre-game show will begin at approximately 6:40 p.m. Tuesday night.
