No. 12 CNU Men's Soccer Advances to C2C Championship With 4-2 Overtime Win Over Wisconsin-Whitewater

SALISBURY, Md. -- Four different Captains scored against the #4-seed University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (13-7-1) on Friday as the 12th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team advanced to the 2022 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship Game with a 4-2 overtime win against the Warhawks at Sea Gull Soccer Stadium in Salisbury, Md. Overtime goals from Trevor Smith and Jonathon Leiding sealed the victory with back-to-back scores early in extra time.

With the victory, the Captains improved to 12-3-1 overall this season and advanced to the team's third straight conference champinship appearance. CNU will return to the field at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 6 with the opportunity to defend their conference crown against either #6-seed Salisbury or #2-seed Mary Washington. At the time of this release, the host Sea Gulls were set to take on the Eagles at 2:00 p.m. in the other semifinal matchup.

Trevor Smith picked a thrilling moment to score his first career goal as the Captains and Warhawks entered overtime under the new NCAA postseason rules. Prior to the 2022 season, the NCAA abolished overtime games in the regular season and changed the extra time in the postseason to a full 20 minutes of play, with two 10-minute periods and no golden goal. Smith wasted little time netting the eventual gamewinner to put the Captains ahead, 3-2, in the 93rd minute of play.

On a restart, Smith stepped up to serve the ball into the box from just inside 50 yards away from the goalmouth. With a crowded area in front, Smith lifted a perfectly placed long ball over the outstretched hands of the goalkeeper that sailed into the goal for the go-ahead score.

Just over a minute later, an insurance tally came in the form of a corner kick goal from Elton Quintanilla to Leiding. After working for a set piece from the corner, Quintanilla sent an arcing pass into the center of the box where the junior defender elevated and hammered home a header into the right side of the netting. It was Leiding's third goal of the season and Quintanilla's sixth helper.

The overtime goals came after Christopher Newport had already built a 2-0 lead in regulation behind second-half scores by rookie Barry Jones and transfer Ryan Machado-Jones. In the 59th minute, Jones slipped a low shot under the sliding goalkeeper after a nice through pass from Kyle Stenzel out of the midfield. Just over two minutes later, Machado-Jones tapped in a centering pass from Brendan Todd for his third goal of the season.

It was the fourth consecutive multi-goal outburst for the Captains, who have now scored three or more goals in a game six times this season. The defense was strong throughout, allowing just four total shots on-goal, but a pair of chances late in the second half allowed the Warhawks to level the game at 2-2. Jalen Holley scored his eighth goal of the season on a third chance shot right in front of the net after Ethan Larson made a terrific first save and the second shot was blocked by a defender. UW-Whitewater then took advantage of a miscommunication in the box  and evened the score on an own goal in the 89th minute of play with just 1:39 showing on the clock.

Christopher Newport will look to capture the team's fourth conference championship since joining the league in 2013-14 and the second under the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference name. Live stats and live video will be available at CNUsports.com.
