Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nationally-Ranked Captains Wallop Goucher College in Historical Women's Basketball Scoring Performance, 120-23

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Matching the program record both for most points scored in a game and largest margin of victory, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team rolled to a 120-23 win over Goucher College on Saturday night. The Captains (5-0) had six players in double figures led by sophomore Hannah Kaloi's 18 points against the Gophers.

The final score mirrored the box score against Averett University on January 19, 1991 when the Captains set the program record with a 97-point win over the Cougars in Ratcliffe Gymnasium. CNU also scored 120 points against Wesley College on November 30, 1990, setting the program scoring mark that the Captains matched nearly 32 years ago. Both hold as Freeman Center records for the Captains, shattering the previous record of +75 against William Peace last year for the largest margin of victory in the 21 seasons in the current home venue.

Along the way, the potent Captains offense and suffocating defense booked themselves into the record book in a few other locations as well. Christopher Newport scored a gargantuan 73 points in the first half, tied for the eighth highest total in NCAA Division III history for a single half. It also stands as a new record for CNU and the most points in a half for the Captains since 1991.

Christopher Newport sank 15 three-pointers, tying for the second-most all-time at CNU, while taking a record 37 attempts from beyond the arc. CNU also dished out 32 assists, tied for the fifth most in a single game, while registering just the 13th 30-assist game in program history and the second since 1997.

Pinpoint passing highlighted an exciting opening stanza that saw Christopher Newport win the first quarter, 45-6, and add a 28-6 run in the second frame. CNU led 21-0 before Goucher got in the book nearly five minutes into the contest, and added to another 11 points to the run to take a 32-2 advantage seven minutes into the game. Senior Anaya Simmons punctuated the first quarter with a steal, layup, and free throw to give the Captains a 39-point lead at the end of one quarter.

A flurry of three-pointers to start the second quarter continued to propel Christopher Newport as Hannah Kaloi, Katy Rader for a pair, and rookie Hailey Kellogg built the lead to 60-9 with 5:35 on the first-half clock. Before the end of the period, Camille Malagar and Ashley Steadman got into the three-point party with long-range buckets of their own.

The Captains shot 65 percent (26-40) from the field in the first half including 52.2 percent from beyond the arc (12-23). Those numbers would trail off only slightly in the second half as the home team finished 55.7 percent from the field (44-79) and 40.5 percent from deep (15-37).

Kaloi's 18 points came on 8-of-9 shooting as the second-year star put together a tremendous game for the Captains. She added a game-high eight rebounds, three blocked shots, and two steals in 14 minutes of play. Seniors Katy Rader and Lauren Fortescue each poured in 14 points while Simmons added 13. Off the bench, sophomore Alexia Lindsey had 12 points and Steadman added 10 for the Captains. Fortescue filled the stat sheet with five rebounds, four assists, and a team-high four steals in the contest, while Rader led the three-point barrage with four made triples.

Nine different players knocked down at least one three-pointer in the game with four different players picking up multiple makes. CNU also dominated inside, outrebounding Goucher by a final count of 54-20.

Christopher Newport picked up it's fifth straight wire-to-wire victory to start the season and will next travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on William Peace University at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22.
