NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport received two weekly honors Monday from the New Jersey Athletic Conference, two days after the Captains were edged by Salisbury, 36-33, in the league championship game. Junior defensive back
Kindrick Braxton was selected the league's Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman running back
Gunner White was chosen as the Offensive Rookie of the Week.
The honor for Braxton is his second of the season. The junior from Goochland, Va., set a new school record for tackles in a game by making 21 total stops on Saturday, with 13 unassisted. He also intercepted a pass in the three-point loss. Braxton had been named Defensive Player of the Week earlier this year after contributing 12 tackles in a home victory over Rowan.
The accolade for White is his third of the year. The freshman from Virginia Beach ran for 36 yards on nine carries, and also led the Captains in receiving with five catches for 78 yards. White caught two touchdown passes from junior quarterback
Matt Dzierski on throws of 16 and 29 yards.
Christopher Newport concluded the year with a 7-3 overall record and a 5-1 mark in the NJAC. First-year Head Coach
Paul Crowley's squad won six straight games, including five in a row in conference play to set up the title game with Salisbury.
