NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Taking on the Catholic University Cardinals in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship Second Round, the Captains were unable to find the back of the net and suffered a 2-0 overtime loss to conclude the 2022 season with an overall record of 13-4-2.
CNU outshot the Cardinals in the game but could not get one by the goalkeeper before the end of regulation. In extra time, the visitors took the lead in the 95th minute and added an insurance tally just over two minutes later. Catholic improved to 13-3-4 overall this season and will play the winner of Johns Hopkins/John Carroll in next weekend's sectional.
The Captains were not lacking for opportunity in the contest, pressuring Austin Coron, the Catholic goalkeeper, with chances throughout. The first major chance came less than five minutes into the contest when Elton Quintanilla and Kyle Stenzel connected for a hard rip that whistled wide right. With under 16 minutes remaining in the first half, Stenzel collected a loose ball a little deeper than 20 yards out and unleashed a blazing drive on target to the left side of the goal, but Coron made an otherworldly save to keep CNU off the board.
Moments later,
Jonah Fitz played a ball through to Quintanilla, who was in a foot race with the keeper to the ball. The Captains' junior got a shot off but it slammed off the sliding keeper and denied the score.
Another top chance for the Captains came early in the second half as the home team blitzed out of the intermission. Quintanilla started the play with a ball into the corner for rookie Matt Liss. The freshman made his way around a defender and crossed a pass into the box where Stenzel connected, but again the shot sailed just wide.
At the end of regulation, Christopher Newport appeared poised to take a man-up advantage after a foul was committed by the Cardinals on a breakaway chance up the middle. The player was not booked, however, and the visitors escaped the Captains' chance in the last minute despite a beautiful ball into the box by Quintanilla that nearly found the head of
Owen Burnett for a would-be winner in the 90th minute. Then, mere moments into extra time, the Captains thought they had earned a penalty kick when Liss had inside positioning against Coron in the box for a loose, bounding ball when contact between the two sent both players sprawling. Play continued and minutes later, Catholic took the lead with their first goal of the overtime period.
Darius Siahpoosh and Connor Bailey scored for the Cardinals, propelling the visitors into the next round.
Christopher Newport closes out the season after one of the finest defensive years in program history. First-year goalkeeper
Ethan Larson registered a top-ten goals-against average in CNU men's soccer history and the team picked up 11 shutouts on the year, tying for the second most in program history.
