MARSHALL, Texas -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball completed a successful trip to Texas on Saturday with a dominant offensive and defensive showing against LeTourneau (1-1) in the East Texas Baptist Tip-Off Tournament. The Captains improved to 3-0 with a 94-48 victory over the Yellowjackets, while forcing 39 turnovers and shooting 53.5 percent (38-71) from the field.
Christopher Newport led wire-to-wire for the third game in a row to start the season and got double-figure scoring from four different players. Sophomore
Hannah Kaloi led the way with a career-high 20 points on an impressive 9-of-10 shooting while
Katy Rader (12),
Sondra Fan (11), and
Alivia Giles (10) each finished in double figures as well. Kaloi scored eight points in a perfect 4-for-4 first quarter that also included a block, a steal, and an assist for the second-year player.
The Captains raced out to a 41-16 advantage at halftime, courtesy of a 25-9 run that kicked off near the end of the first quarter and rolled through a one-sided second stanza. The Captains were balanced in the second quarter, with only one player knocking down more than one bucket as
Alexia Lindsey was 2-for-3 for four points.
Camille Malagar and Kaloi each drained triples while Fan,
Lauren Fortescue, and Giles each dropped in one field goal. It was the defensive end that was even more cohesive, forcing 11 Yellowjacket turnovers and holding their opponent without a field goal made for the ten-minute period (0-10).
After building an expansive lead at intermission, the Captains nearly doubled it with a torrid second half. Shooting 63.6 percent after halftime by knocking down 21 of 33 shots, the Captains notched 53 second-half points. In the final ten minutes, CNU missed just four attempts, burying 75 percent (12-16) as they continued to pulla way from LeTourneau in the neutral site contest.
In the fourth quarter, Christopher Newport scored four three-pointers from four different players as Kaloi, Fan, Rader, and rookie
Makenna Zimmerman each notched a long-range jumper. Kaloi was putting the finishing touches on a career-best performance, scoring five more points in the final frame.
Hannah Orloff led the team in rebounding with nine boards in 14 minutes including four on the offensive glass. Fan stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals in her best game of the young season, knocking down 4-of-6 shots from the field. Rader led the way defensively with five steals and the aforementioned duo were two of six players with multiple thefts.
Christopher Newport will return to the Commonwealth with a pristine 3-0 start to the season. The Captains will head to Mary Baldwin University on Wednesday, November 16 to take on the Fighting Squirrels at 6:00 p.m.
