CNU Men's Soccer Hosts Washington and Lee in Nationally-Ranked Battle Saturday Evening

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With first touch scheduled for 6:00 p.m., the 24th-ranked Captains (8-2-0) will host the 9th-ranked Washington and Lee University Generals (8-1-2) on Senior Night at Captains Field on Saturday. The nationally-ranked showdown will be the ninth all-time matchup between the two teams.

Christopher Newport is off to an 8-2-0 start this season and is coming off a 4-0 thrashing of Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night. The Captains offense got four second-half goals from four different players and coasted to a big win over the cross-water rivals.

Washington and Lee is looking to get back in the win column after an unlikely draw with Lynchburg on Wednesday after scoring the game-tying goal in the 88th minute of action. That came after a run of four straight wins including a 3-1 win over common opponent Hampden-Sydney College on October 1.

The series favors the Generals, 5-2-1, and the last CNU victory against Washington and Lee came in 2000 when assistant coach Ryan Hagerty helped shut out the Generals, 1-0, in the NCAA South Region championship as a starting member of the defense. The victory sent the Captains to the team's first ever National Quarterfinals appearance. The two teams didn't play again until 2017 when the rivalry was renewed, with regular season matchups in each of the last four seasons.

This season, Christopher Newport has been led by a top-notch defense that has allowed just seven goals through the first ten games, including six shutouts. Senior goalkeeper Ethan Larson has a 0.76 goals-against average while facing 74 shots in his first year as the starting netminder. In front of him, the Captains have seen a host of players contribute on the back line, led by 10-game starters Ryan Kiely and Trevor Smith

Offensively, Brendan Todd and Elton Quintanilla lead the way with seven points apiece. Ryan Machado-Jones is close behind with six points while leading the team in assists with four helpers.

Washington and Lee comes into the contest averaging 3.0 goals per game while holding opponents to 1.18 per contest. Weyimi Agbeyegbe, who scored the game-tying goal against Lynchburg, leads the team with 17 points on eight tallies and one assists. Michael Kutsanzira has also added 15 points on six goals and three asists, while Samuel Bass and Matteo Adler have also reached double figures.

Prior to the game, the Captains will honor the senior class of 2022 in one of their final home regular season games. Following the action, CNU will travel to St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday, October 15 for a 6:00 pm kickoff.
