NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Celebrating Senior Day in style, the 19th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team punctuated the regular season with a 3-0 victory over Mary Washington during a Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference clash on a cloud-covered Saturday morning at Jennings Family Stadium.
Headlining the action,
Emma Logue opened the scoring and deposited her third game-winning goal of the season with a strike in the 24th minute. Fellow senior
Marcella Sabbagh also added her 14th career defensive save, moving her three shy of former legend Brittan Muir's all-time school record.
Along with Logue and Sabbagh,
Morgan Arthur,
Abby Asuncion,
Alexis Morales, and
Vivian Pope all starred for the Captains after participating in the program's annual Senior Day festivities before the contest.
In addition to the veteran standouts,
Katie Abendschoen and
Lainey Pratzner both contributed goals, while
Lily Kerr chipped in with six saves. With that performance, she recorded her seventh shutout of the year, tying former All-American Bailey Lien for the most in a single season in program history. Lien notched seven during the school's run to the Final Four in 2013.
The victory bumped Christopher Newport to 13-4, while the setback dropped Mary Washington to 5-12. The Captains will now enter the league playoffs as the No. 2 seed. The squad will open the postseason on Wednesday at 5 p.m. with a rematch against the Eagles at Jennings Family Stadium.
In the early going, the two teams traded rallies. Just 60 seconds into regulation, Mary Washington orchestrated the first surge and earned a corner. Cleaning up on the defensive side, Kerr kicked away an initial bullet before Sabbagh blocked a second rip on the interior. After collecting the rebound, the fourth-year phenom scampered out of the circle and fed possession to Asuncion, who burned up the turf on a successful clear before securing a corner of her own.
With an opportunity to open the scoring, three seniors teamed up for a dangerous threat. Logue sent a perfect insert to Morales, who quickly connected with Pope. With the defense flowing her way, Pope slipped it back to Morales, who whistled a screamer from the top of the arc. Unfortunately, the rocket was swallowed by a defender along the end line to keep the hosts off the board.
Continuing the seesaw affair, Mary Washington pieced together a sustained run later in the period. Collecting another corner, the Eagles had a decent look, but Kerr came away with another kick save before Sabbagh brushed aside a second-chance opportunity with some fancy stick work between the pipes.
Although the visitors eventually earned another corner, Morales blocked a rip at the top of the zone to keep the game scoreless.
In the second stanza, Christopher Newport picked up the pressure. Tormenting Mary Washington's defense with a relentless attack, the Captains had four corners and seven shots in the first eight minutes of the period. Unfortunately, the Eagles held up as the defense smothered six of the attempts, while a laser by Sabbagh just caught the left pipe and skipped out of bounds.
Still looking for a breakthrough, the hosts found an opening in the 24th minute. Mary Washington attempted to clear the defensive zone, but
Emily Evans and
Delaney Norr applied pressure and locked down the left side of the field. Facing a blockade, the Eagles tried to swing the ball to the right side, but Logue jumped the pass, intercepted the feed, and unloaded a one-timer while sliding across the turf to give the Captains a 1-0 edge.
Staring at a one-goal deficit, Mary Washington attempted to retaliate just before halftime. Trying to capitalize on another corner play, the Eagles had multiple looks but were stoned on the doorstep. Kerr made another save before
Brooke Billhimer deflected a shot along the left post. Although the visitors kept possession and attempted to work the ball around the arc, Abendschoen barreled in, stole a pass at the top of the zone, and flipped the field to kill off the first half.
Following the break, Christopher Newport went back to work on both sides of the field. On an early offensive rush, Arthur broke down a defender with impressive footwork. After securing a feed from Asuncion, she battled through contact at the top of the arc, spun to her right, and unloaded a missile that was blocked at the last minute by a second Eagle. Later, Mary Washington marched down the field and peppered the Captains, but Kerr made three saves, including a gorgeous stop while sprawled out on the turf before Abendschoen collected the rebound.
After the defensive stand, the hosts quickly extended their advantage. In the 41st minute, Abendschoen uncorked a blast from the top of the arc. Although her initial shot was kicked away by the keeper, Pratzner gobbled up the deflection and slammed it inside the right pipe for her first goal of the year.
Entering the final quarter with a 2-0 lead, Christopher Newport wasted little time throwing a third strike on the board. Following a corner, Pope stepped up and snapped off a rocket from the top of the zone. Although a defender managed to get her stick on the ball, it bounced right out to Abendschoen. Without hesitating, the second-year sensation tucked a low liner into the back of the cage for a 3-0 lead.
After that point, the Captains eased into the victory. Christopher Newport controlled possession during a solid four-minute surge, which cut crucial time off the clock. Eventually, the Eagles managed to get the ball across midfield for one final rally, but
Brie Mallozzi stayed tight on an attacker and forced Mary Washington's last-ditch attempt to spin wide.
Overall, Christopher Newport held a 30-12 advantage in shots and a 15-5 edge in corners.
