NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University football squad has won its last four games, and Saturday heads to New Jersey for the second time in three weeks. The Captains, now 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), take on the Red Hawks of Montclair State University at Sprague Field in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. MSU is 2-5 and 0-3, and has lost its last four games.
"Two weeks ago when we traveled to Kean, we played probably our most balanced game of the year and won there for the first time ever," First Year Head Coach
Paul Crowley said. "We're taking the same approach this weekend, and want to carry over the momentum from the last month. Montclair State is a solid program and well coached, so as always in the NJAC I expect another hard-fought battle."
Crowley's Captains are coming off a dominating defensive effort last week in a 31-7 victory last Saturday at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium over William Paterson University. The Captains allowed just 99 total yards in the 24-point Homecoming victory over the Pioneers, and have now not allowed a point in the second half of their last two games. The Captains are tied atop the NJAC standings with Salisbury at 3-0.
Montclair State had last weekend off, and the Red Hawks are looking to snap a four-game losing skid. MSU Head Coach Rick Giancola is in his 40th season leading the Hawks, and is the current active wins leader in all of Division III with 260 career victories. Saturday's matinee will be the seventh meeting all-time of the programs, and the series is all even at 3-3. Last year at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium, the Captains shut out the Red Hawks by a 28-0 margin. CNU is 1-2 all-time in games played at Sprague Field in Montclair.
The Captains five wins this year equals the win total from last season when Christopher Newport registered a 5-5 final record. It marks the first four-game winning streak since the Captains won their final four games of the 2018 season to finish with a 7-2 mark. CNU last won five straight games in a single season in 2014, an 8-4 campaign that saw
Matt Kelchner's squad advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
All Christopher Newport games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with this week's pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
