FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The defensive dominance continued for the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon as the Captains (14-0-1) picked up their fifth consecutive shutout with a 1-0 win on the road at Mary Washington (8-4-4). Junior forward
Corinne Kulik scored her first career goal in her first career start to win the match for the Captains in the 59th minute of play while the defense locked down for 90 minutes and earned the team's eleventh clean sheet of the year.
Playing against the Eagles for the second straight game, the Captains came away with the same result as they did at home on Wednesday night. CNU captured the team's 13th consecutive win, tying for the fourth longest streak in program history, and added to a program-record road winning streak that is now also at 13 consecutive wins.
CNU has strung together a shutout streak of 516 minutes and 38 seconds, ranking as the sixth longest run without surrendering a goal in program history. The record, a 602 minute streak, was established in 2008. Christpher Newport has now posted a shutout streak of at least 500 minutes three times in the last three seasons.
In Saturday afternoon's bout, the Captains got gutsy complete game efforts from
Abby Harrigan,
Sarah Rhiel,
Nyah Savage,
Re Slater,
Jill McDonald, and
Kate Eissenberg to help secure the shutout for goalkeeper
Jaya Daniel. The sophomore netminder made six saves to keep Mary Washington off the board, while the defense grinded out another strong performance overall.
While the back line continued to keep CNU in the game, the attack pressed forward and eventually broke through on a goal early in the second half. Eissenberg started the play with a long pass that bounced over the back of the defense where Kulik raced onsides and caught the Eagles goalkeeper too far off her line with a chip shot up and over for the score.
Kulik,
Natalie Swarm, and
Maddie Blake all challenged the Mary Washington keeper in the second half following the goal, looking to double the lead, but the score remained 1-0 until the final horn.
With the win, CNU improved to 36-0-2 while authoring the nation's longest active streak without a loss. The 38-game run is the longest since Hardin-Simmons completed a 45-game burst between September 5, 2016 and November 19, 2017, and stands as the seventh-longest roll in Division III women's soccer history.
Christopher Newport will close out the regular season at home next weekend as they welcome Salisbury University for Senior Day on Saturday, October 29 at 5:00 p.m. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
