NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University celebrates Homecoming this weekend, and the Captains hope to celebrate a fourth consecutive football victory. CNU hosts the Pioneers of William Paterson University Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium.
Christopher Newport is coming off a 24-13 victory last Saturday in Union, New Jersey, over Kean University. The win, the third straight for
Paul Crowley's squad, improved the Captains' record to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the New Jersey Atheltic Conference. CNU is now tied atop the league standings with Salisbury at 2-0.
"Last week we really put together a complete game for the first time this year," Crowley said. "Offense, defense, and special teams were all playing at a high level. We want to carry that kind of effort into Saturday's game, because William Paterson is going to give us a tough battle."
Junior quarterback
Matt Dzierski again had a hand in all three touchdowns for the Captains, throwing for a score and running for two. He was named the NJAC's Offensive Player of the Week, and was also named to the DC Touchdown Club Player of the Week Honor Roll for his efforts. Dzierski has now run for seven scores this year, and thrown five touchdown passes in the first six games.
William Paterson is coming off a 14-9 home loss last Saturday to Rowan. The Pioneers are now 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the NJAC. Saturday's meeting will be the seventh all-time, and the Captains hold a 5-1 lead in the series. Last year in Wayne, New Jersey, the Pioneers defeated Christopher Newport by a score of 48-28.
Tickets for the game will be available at the gate prior to kickoff. The stadium gates will open to fans at 12 noon.
