NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The second-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team returns home for the first time in well over a month as they are set to play host to Mary Washington (14-4) on Saturday, January 29 at 2:00 pm. Additionally, the Captains (16-0) have announced a schedule change for next week's road trip and will now face off against Wheaton College in Illinois on February 5.
Tipping off at the Freeman Center for the first time since December 12, the nationally-ranked Captains will host the first of just two remaining regular season games at home this Saturday. Fans are encouraged to join the team in wearing pink to support breast cancer awareness.
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com for fans unable to attend in person. Links to both can be found on the women's basketball schedule online.
The Saturday afternoon matchup will wrap the home-and-home series against the Eagles this season after Christopher Newport traveled to Fredericksburg and secured a 68-61 win on January 15. CNU improved to 35-21 all-time against Mary Washington and has won five straight against the Eagles.
CNU currently boasts the longest active winning streak in NCAA basketball, men's or women's, as winners of 33 straight contests. The Captains are one of six teams in Division III without a loss this season and have been led by a dominant offense that ranks third nationally in scoring and field goal efficiency.
Junior forward
Anaya Simmons is coming off a double-double performance at Salisbury as she continues to impress as one of the team's leaders offensively and defensively. Simmons is pouring in 12.4 points per game and ranks second on the team in rebounding and steals.
Mary Washington is coming off a buzzer-beating loss at Stevenson, 62-60, on Monday evening to fall to 14-4. Senior Tory Martin has led the way for the Eagles with 10.4 points per game while sophomore forward Jordan Carpenter has burst to the forefront this season with 9.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game.
Following the matchup against the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foe, Christopher Newport will travel to the Midwest to take on Wheaton College (Ill.) and Finlandia University. The originally scheduled game at Mount Mary on February 5 has been canceled and replaced with the matchup against the Thunder. Playing on back-to-back nights, CNU will then travel to Finlandia for a bout on Sunday, February 6.
