No. 2 CNU Women's Basketball Travels to Salisbury for Saturday Afternoon Battle

SALISBURY, Md. -- Christopher Newport women's basketball hits the road again on Saturday, January 22 as they take on Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference rival Salisbury University (12-3) at 2:00 pm. The second-ranked Captains (15-0) travel to the Eastern Shore of Maryland for their sixth straight game away from home with the team's third game in eight days.

Powered by a potent offense and stifling defense, the Captains have won all 15 games so far this season while climbing to No. 2 in both the WBCA and D3hoops.com Top 25 polls. Salisbury won 12 of it's first 14 games before suffering an eight-point loss to Scranton, 63-55, in their last outing on Tuesday. The Sea Gulls will be looking to bounce back against the Captains, who have won ten straight against Salisbury.

CNU owns a 25-12 advantage in the all-time series against Salisbury, including ten straight dating back to February 3, 2016. The next chapter in the conference rivalry will be presented online via live stats and a live video webcast provided by the Salisbury University Department of Athletics. Links to both can be found on the CNUsports.com women's basketball schedule.

The Captains captured a 50-point victory in their last outing against Methodist University on Wednesday, January 19. It was the team's seventh win of the season by at least 50 points as CNU ranks second nationally in scoring margin, averaging +38.7 per game this year. Senior guard Sondra Fan leads the way with 16.6 points per game as the Poquoson, Va. native has led the team in scoring in seven of her last eight games played.

Ranking second on the team in scoring is Anaya Simmons, pouring in 12.1 points per game while ranking third nationally in field-goal percentage. Simmons has knocked down 61.8% of her attempts from the field while also ranking second on the team in steals with 30.

Salisbury features a veteran core led by seniors Kaylee Otlowski and Lauren Fortescue with over 14 points per game each. Otlowski is also averaging 9.4 rebounds per game while Fortescue chips in nearly 4 assists per contest. Head coach Kelly Baskow started four seniors as Jada Welbon and Kylie Webb join the aforementioned Otlowski and Fortescue to provide the Sea Gulls with one of the most experienced lineups the Captains have faced this season.

Following Saturday's bout with Salisbury, the Captains will return home for a single game next Saturday, January 29, before hitting the road for four more. CNU will host Mary Washington at 2:00 pm on the 29th.
