FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- After running their win streak to a program record 31 games last week, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team are now a unanimous No. 2 in the nation according to both the D3hoops.com and WBCA national rankings. The Captains (14-0) will next head to Fayetteville, N.C. to take on Methodist University (7-6) on Wednesday night for a 6:00 pm tipoff against the Monarchs, looking to extend their season-opening win streak to 15.
CNU is coming off one of it's most impressive wins of the season after dropping nationally-ranked Mary Washington on the road, 68-61, without the services of leading scorer
Sondra Fan. In the contest, senior forward
Natalie Terwilliger blocked a career-high six shots and eclipsed 100 for her career to become only the eighth player in program history with more than 100 swats. She added six points, four rebounds, three steals and an assist to help lead the nationally-ranked Captains.
On the offensive end, junior guard
Jovia Winkey stepped into the starting role for Fan and finished the game with a team-leading 14 points and four steals. She played a career-high 31 minutes and knocked down 9-of-10 attempts from the free-throw line while also dishing three assists and hauling in three rebounds. For her efforts, Winkey was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Christopher Newport will be renewing one of it's longest standing rivalries when it travels to the Riddle Center on the campus of Methodist University. As conference opponents for decades as members of the USA South Athletic Conference, CNU and Methodist have matched up 85 times prior to Wednesday's next chapter in the series. Christopher Newport owns a 66-19 advantage and have played the Monarchs at least once in all but five seasons since the 1979-80 campaign.
Due to Methodist University's announced COVID-19 protocols, spectators will not be permitted to attend the game in person. A live video stream and live stats will be available with links to both at the top of this page and on the women's basketball schedule at CNUsports.com.
Following the mid-week matchup, Christopher Newport will adjust it's focus to Salisbury University (12-3) on Saturday at 2:00 pm. That will conclude a six-game road trip for the Captains that extends back to mid-December.
