CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- In their second top-25 matchup of the weekend of third in the last four games, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback in overtime on Sunday afternoon, falling to the 25th-ranked Emory University Eagles (4-1-2). The evenly played match was back-and-forth until extra time when the Eagles snuck through the winner in the 94th minute of action.
The Captains put together a well-disciplined and impressive defensive performance throughout the match as
Daniel Hulett,
Jacob Dudley, and
Jonathon Leiding all played the full time on the back line.
Davis Pillow also started in the back and CNU held the potent Emory attack to just three total shots on-goal in the game. In regulation, only two shots tested senior goalkeeper
Cole Irvin, and the Captains' netminder snared both to keep their opponent scoreless through the first 90 minutes.
CNU controlled the action moving forward in the first half, putting four of their seven shots on-goal before intermission.
Alex Risko led the attack off the bench, ripping a pair of shots on-goal in the opening stanza.
Will Collins and Leiding each added shots on-goal while
Jonah Fitz,
Mason Field, and
Jason LaViola each added attempts for the Captains.
While the Captains offense was aggressive early, the defense set the tone and allowed just three first-half shots including only one on frame. Alejandro Gomez put the one Eagles shot on goal and it was stopped by Irvin.
By the end of the contest, the shot count was even at 10-10 with CNU holding a 5-3 advantage in shots on-goal. CNU took three corner kicks to Emory's 1, and the Captains committed just three fouls in the over 93 minutes of action. The disciplined defense kept the Captains in the match, but the offense never came through with the go-ahead score. Instead, Emory connected in the 94th minute when Gomez set up Madison Conduah for his first goal of the season.
Christopher Newport will return to Newport News with a 3-3-2 overall record. The Captains will next play on October 2 at 7:00 pm when they host the University of Mary Washington. One of just three home games left on the schedule for CNU Men's Soccer, gates will open one hour prior to kickoff.
