Captains Travel to Catholic for Saturday Matinee; Final Non-Conference Game of 2021

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University looks to snap a two-game losing streak on Saturday, heading to Washington, D.C., to take on the Catholic University of America. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Cardinals Stadium. It will be the first meeting ever of the two programs.

Art Link's team is 1-2 following a 26-19 defeat last week to Ferrum College at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium. Catholic is 2-1 and coming off a 32-29 triumph last Saturday at home over Endicott. Saturday's game will be the final of four non-conference games this season for the Captains leading up to a six-game conference schedule in the NJAC. "We've got to bounce back from that tough loss and turn it around," Head Coach Art Link said. "We've worked hard this week preparing for Catholic, and I think the result of that will be visible on Saturday. Catholic is a good team and can score lots of points, so our defense will certainly be tested."

The Captains have played three close games to open the season, with the games being decided by a grand total of just 14 points. Christopher Newport began the year with a home victory over Washington and Lee, 28-24. In week two, CNU fell in overtime at Averett, 30-27, prior to last week's seven-point home loss to Ferrum. Sophomore quarterback Matt Dzierski has thrown four touchdowns passes this season and has also run for four scores in the first three games. He is averaging 204 yards passing per game.

Catholic's sophomore quarterback Madden Lowe is also off to a great start. Lowe has tossed nine scoring passes, and has completed 72 percent of his pass attempts. The Cardinals opened the year with a victory over McDaniel, 40-7, and then lost at Randolph-Macon, 62-10, before last week's exciting three-point victory over Endicott.

Saturday's 1:30 tilt will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 1:00 p.m. You can listen to the Captains Radio Broadcast by clicking HERE.
