Last Minute Heroics from Abby Harrigan Lead No. 6 CNU Women's Soccer to 1-0 Win at Randolph-Macon

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport dominated offensive action throughout the contest but found the match still tied, 0-0, headed into the final minute of play at Randolph-Macon College on Monday night. That is when senior midfielder Abby Harrigan snuck the game-winning goal by the R-MC keeper with just 46 seconds remaining to lead the Captains to the road win.

The Captains improved to 5-0-0 on the season while dropping the hosts to 3-4-0. It is just the third time in program history the CNU women's soccer program has won each of it's first five games as the 2021 version of the Captains join 2000 and 2018 before them.

The game-winning goal came in the 90th minute when Riley Cook dribbled up the right side of the field before cutting back and rolling a perfect lead pass to Abby Harrigan down the middle of the field. Harrigan took a touch into space at the top of the box before one more around a defender. The Captains' senior midfielder then blistered a left-footed laser into the left side of the netting to stun the upset-minded Yellow Jackets.

Harrigan netted her second goal of the season with the winning strike, which served as the second game-winning goal of her career.

Cook had her own close range opportunity to give the Captains the lead just minutes earlier, highlighting a barrage of CNU shots in the contest. Christopher Newport took 25 shots, including 11 on frame, in the match, led by Cook's nine total with four on-net. Her late rip from inside the 18 skipped just high over the crossbar as she worked against a pair of defenders.

While the Captains offense was working through the Randolph-Macon defense, the CNU back line limited the chances for the Yellow Jackets attack to just two shots on-frame. With about 21 minutes left in the first half, Randolph-Macon had a nice combination of passes to loose an attacker at the top of the box with no one in front of her. A moment of hesitation allowed Nyah Savage time to sprint back and contest her shot, halting the Yellow Jackets best opportunity of the first half.

In the second half, Haley Eiser needed to make just a single save to preserve the clean sheet, earning her 20th career shutout and becoming just the fourth Captain in program history to reach the milestone. Eiser also secured her 37th career victory, tying Meghan Gumbs for second on the all-time list at Christopher Newport.

With their fifth straight win to start the season, the Captains will carry a perfect record across country for their next two matches as they travel to California this weekend. First up, CNU will face Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foe UC Santa Cruz on Friday, September 24 at 12:00 pm (3:00 pm EST). The Captains will then take on Cal Lutheran on Saturday, September 25 at 2:00 pm (5:00 pm EST).
