Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. -- After enduring the long travel from Newport News to Chicago, the 16th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team was forced to wait even longer for the highly-anticipated top-20 showdown with host University of Chicago after a lightning storm delayed action for over two hours. When play resumed, the Captains took a 1-0 lead into halftime but the Maroons scored three times in the second half to pull out a 3-1 win at home over Christopher Newport.
With their first setback of the season, Christopher Newport falls to 2-1-2 overall this season and sees an 11-match unbeaten streak come to a close. Chicago improved to 4-0-1 with the win.
The Captains pulled ahead on
Owen Burnett's first goal of the season when
Chris Schram set up the veteran forward for the strike in the 32nd minute of action. Shots were limited after the lightning delay as Schram challenged the Chicago keeper once and
Will Collins ripped one just wide before the go-ahead tally by Burnett. On the other end, the CNU defense held the Maroons attack to just two shots in the first half.
Early in the second half, the Captains nearly doubled their lead when
Jonathon Leiding hammered a header off the post following a
Cory Hogge corner kick. The near-miss would be the best opportunity for CNU to add to the lead before Chicago equalized just minutes later. The first of two goals by Ryan Yetishefsky tied the match in the 52nd minute before he added the eventual gamewinner in the 59th.
The home team tacked on an insurance goal in the 70th minute for the final spread, 3-1.
Christopher Newport will have an off day Saturday before taking on North Park University (5-1-0) this Sunday, September 19 at 1:00 pm (2:00 pm EST).Â
