Christopher Newport Hosts Ferrum Saturday Night as Football Program Celebrates 20 Seasons of Action

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University hosts Ferrum College Saturday evening at TowneBank Stadium, with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m. A special ceremony is planned shortly before kickoff during the 20th Anniversary celebration of the Captains program.

"This is a very special weekend for our student-athletes and those who have been a part of the program over the years," Head Coach Art Link said. "Christopher Newport football has a tradition of excellence dating back to the start of the program, and it will be great to see many familiar faces returning to celebrate that tradition."

Christopher Newport is 1-1 after losing in overtime at Averett last Saturday, 30-27. Ferrum is 1-0, and was off last week. The Panthers opened the seasons with a 31-24 triumph at home over Averett on September 4th.

The matchup will be the 15th all-time, and Christopher Newport holds a 13-1 lead in the series. The squads last played in the 2014 campaign, when the Captains recorded a 21-19 win at TowneBank Stadium. The series dates back to the first year of Captains football in 2001, when CNU defeated Ferrum in the Oyster Bowl in Hampton, 14-11. The victory captured a conference title and propelled the Captains to their first NCAA Tournament appearance.

Saturday's game will be the third of four non-conference games this year for Art Link's program, and will be followed by six New Jersey Athletic Conference battles. Tickets for the game will be available at TowneBank Stadium Saturday, with gates opening at 5:00 p.m.
