Christopher Newport Blanks Virginia State to Win Fifth Straight

Christopher Newport Volleyball won their fifth straight match on Wednesday night, taking a 3-0 sweep over Virginia State. Freshman Kyla McIntyre once again led the Captains' attack with 11 kills while Sammy Carroll added 37 assists and four service aces.

First Set (Captains 28-26)

In the night's most competitive set, the Trojans held one of their only leads of the night in the first set. Neither side ever built up much of a lead as an early 7-2 CNU advantage was the largest either side got ahead in this set. Anna Dean led the Captains in points through the first set with three kills and an ace. With the score tied at 24, VSU got a kill from Kiara Hill to bring up a set point. The Trojans could've closed out set one if not for Mackenzie Wright and Kyla McIntyre, who blocked a VSU attack and brought the score even at 25. A McIntyre kill scored the next point, but a service error allowed VSU to tie the set again. After an attacking error gave CNU their second set point, Anna Dean registered her third kill to take set one for Christoper Newport.

Second Set (Captains 25-21)

CNU rode some momentum from the first set into the second one as they scored seven of the set's first 10 points. But VSU would erase that early run knotting things up at 13. Mackenzie Wright led the way with five kills in the second set while Anna Dean served up two more aces. Down the stretch, Wright drove home three straight kills to put CNU out in front. Kyla McIntyre killed two of her own, and Dean contributed an ace and a kill before Maddie Carter closed it out with her third kill of the set.

Third Set (Captains 25-12)

The Captains completely dominated the third set, as evidenced by the final score. CNU scored the first seven points of the set, including three Sammy Carroll aces and three kills from Maddie Carter. With a commanding lead, Sam Senfield delivered the final blow as her first kill of the night was the final point in a 3-0 win for the Captains.

News & Notes

  • Maddie Carter and Kyla McIntyre each scored their 100th point of the season tonight. Carter leads the team with 109 with McIntyre close behind with 105.5

  • Sammy Carroll's four service aces mark a new season best and matches a career high.

  • McIntyre's 11 kills is the most she's had in a three set match so far this season. The freshman had previously only reached double-digit kills in four or five set matches.
