McIntyre Strikes for 20 Kills in Captains' Win over Meredith

Freshman Kyla McIntyre became the first Captain to blast 20 kills in a game this season as Christopher Newport topped Meredith 3-1 on Friday night in the first game of a three-game road trip.

First Set (Captains 25-18)

Two separate 6-0 CNU runs made for a somewhat lopsided start to this match. The Captains jumped out to a 7-1 lead, with Kyla McIntyre scoring the first two CNU points. Aside from stellar play at the net, errors plagued the Meredith attack that hit -.111 in the first set with nine errors. CNU ended the second set with their second 6-0 run and a service ace from Macy Burk.

Second Set (Meredith 26-24)

The two sides looked much more evenly matched in the second set, each registering 16 kills. They traded runs before trading points, and neither side could gain an edge. McIntyre certainly made her mark on this set with seven kills, including one that saw CNU come within one point of Meredith, 23-24. An Avenging Angels attack error tied the score at 24, but Meredith managed to string two kills together to take the second set.

Third Set (Captains 25-23)

Both teams did well to hold serve in their third set. The Captains started out with four points in a row, but Meredith responded soon after with six straight points of their own. McIntyre added six more kills to her total, which helped CNU answer Meredith runs with a 5-0 run of their own. Trailing 21-23, CNU found their form to score the final four points of the set and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Fourth Set (Captains 25-12)

In a close match that had seen two sets decided by two points, Christopher Newport poured it on in a dominant fourth set. The Captains scored eight in a row to take a 23-10 advantage. It was a balanced attack in the fourth set, with six different CNU players registering a kill. Annie Inghram and Mackenzie Wright hammered home the final two CNU kills of the match to take home a 3-1 win.
