Last Season
CNU returns to the court after COVID-19 canceled the entire 2020 season. The last time the Captains competed was the 2019 NCAA Tournament, where they made their 13th consecutive tournament appearance. Since then, the Captains have welcomed 11 new faces to the roster as they set out to defend their conference title and keep their streak of NCAA Tournament appearances alive. Seniors Mackenzie Wright, Maddie Carter, and Rebecca Frey return from the 2019 team that posted a 27-9 record and captured the conference title.
By The Numbers
6-1
CNU was nearly perfect in road games in 2019, winning six of their seven matches away from home. It was their best road record since the 2015 team went 7-0 against their road slate and also began their campaign with a 3-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan.
Series History
CNU leads the all-time series 17-2 against the Marlins. The Captains won the first 16 meetings of a series that started in 2002. Virginia Wesleyan won the most recent contest in a five-set thriller at the 2019 CNU Invitational.
Scouting the Marlins
Virginia Wesleyan were tied for second in the recently announced Old Dominion Athletic Conference preseason poll. Tied with Randolph-Macon, the Marlins sit only behind Washington & Lee in the 2021 ODAC poll. Karissa Cumberbatch was elevated from assistant to head coach in the offseason/ She inherits a roster that returns 11, including four seniors, from last year's squad that went 10-4 in an abbreviated, spring season.
