NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team will wrap up the 2021 regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader against St. Mary's College of Maryland. The Captains (18-8, 10-4) will throw out the first pitch of game one at Noon, following a pregame ceremony for the senior class of 2021.
While Christopher Newport has already locked up the #2-seed and hosting duties for next weekend's Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, the doubleheader could play a factor in who captures #3 and #4, respectively, between the Seahawks and Mary Washington. All three teams will be headed to Captains Park next weekend in double-elimination opening round action.
Prior to the action on Sunday, seven seniors will be recognized for their contributions as Captains. Team manager
Dylan Rosnick will be joined by outfielder
Conner Clark, catcher
Eric O'Brien, and pitchers
Nathan Clements,
Gray Goodrich,
Josh Husby, and
Carter Strain.
CNU has won eight of their last nine games and is averaging over 10 runs per game in that stretch. Leading the offense has been rookie
Jay Cassady, riding a 12-game hitting streak and ranking second in the conference with a .394 average. He also ranks second in RBI, trailing only his teammate
Eric O'Brien on the leaderboard. The senior catcher not only leads the league in RBI with 28 but also ranks fourth in the conference average with a .376 mark.
The Captains bullpen has been stalwart this season, boasting a 3.32 ERA in 108.1 innings of work. Clements has helped lead the charge with a 1.46 ERA in 10 appearances while freshman
Matt Gaither is 2-1 with 2 saves in 15 showings. He and
Jack Rosenberg each have 2.45 ERA's with a pair of saves each.
St. Mary's (Md.) snagged a split of their home doubleheader against the Captains and are 8-12 overall with a 6-8 record in conference play. Dillon Waters is hitting a team-best .364 with 16 RBI while Jake Wood leads the team with 21 RBI as he is hitting .356 on the year. Waters is also the staff ace, posting a 3.73 ERA in 31.1 innings of work.
